It is a resident breeder in much of the western and central regions of southern Africa and has been introduced to Ascension and St Helena islands. Its habitat is karoo and coastal or mountain valley scrub. It builds a compact cup nest in a scrub.

*note: the first picture was mistakenly labeled as the "yellow-rumped seedeater" in the poll it won but is in fact a Reichenow's seedeater. Since it absolutely dominated its first poll and nobody expressed deep knowledge of the bird, I presume it won based on appearance and will progress it with the correct common name.
