There is nothing so satisfying as to actually use something that you created on your own. That is how I feel about my dry-mop cover. This project has been in my Pinterest pocket for months, and I just never got around to crocheting it. It may have something to do with the fact that I really don’t like to clean, and any thought of dust mopping my hardwood floors gives me a back ache. But for this spring cleaning project, I figured it was time to suck it up and make the cover, and I am so glad I did.
While doing some research on Swiffer covers (okay, looking at other people’s creations), I discovered Fun Fur yarn. Yes, I knew about Fun Fur, and my mom recently gave me a bunch of skeins that she wasn’t using, but I never knew what to do with them. I am not the type of person who wants a feathery scarf or shawl or sweater, so the skeins just sat on my shelf waiting to be put to use.
My Feather Duster
It turns out, that this is a great yarn to use for cleaning projects! I made a (feather-like) duster cover for ledges with it too, you can get the pattern here. But for this challenge, I wanted to make a Swiffer cover; it was so simple to make, I plan to make more so I don’t have to keep buying refills! Plus, the duster is so soft and luxurious that it would be a great housewarming gift for anyone setting out on his/her own. Here are the details:
Materials
Fun Fur – Champagne
Bernat Pipsqeak – Vanilla
Caron Simply Soft – Off White
J Hook
Tapestry Needle
Notes:
The pad is made with the Fun Fur and the Pipsqueak yarn crochet together.
The flaps are made with the Caron Simply Soft yarn, and they are to be worked along the length of the pad.
Instructions for Pad:
Foundation Row: Ch 16
Row 1: sc in 2nd ch from hook and across foundation chain (15 sc), ch 1, turn
Row 2 – 30: sc in 1st sc, and in each sc across (15 sc per row), ch 1, turn. At row 30 do not ch 1, bind off.
Instructions for Flaps (make 1 on each side of the pad):
Row 1: Beginning at one end of the long edge of the pad, pull up a loop with the Simply Soft yarn. Ch 1, sc in 1st st and work an even 29 sc along the length of the pad.
Row 2 – 6: ch 2, dc in 1st sc and in each sc across (30 sc). At the end of Row 6, bind off.
With a tapestry needle, sew the loose ends into the duster.
This was so easy to put together, and the results were fantastic. The combination of the two yarns was like a cushy pillow; I almost felt guilty not making a blanket or collar out of them (I still might). As far as picking up the dust on my hardwood and tile floor, it works excellent. And the best thing is, this cover is reusable! All you have to do is shake it off outside, throw it in the laundry, and use it over and over, no more buying refills! This is a great crochet project for the beginner or the experienced crocheter, and to be able to use what you’ve made will give anyone a sense of accomplishment!
