Books that stick

So crookedwinding tagged me in this and I was super excited because omg internet people know who I am and I am still capable of making new internet friends yay! So here's my list of ten books off the top of my head with minimal commentary, in chronological order of when I read them.

I listed #1 because I was having trouble deciding between a bunch of books, and I always loved this one as a kid, and I was reminded of that when I got a copy of it to read to my own kids (although they prefer to chew on it rather than hear the story).  Stop!  You must not hop on pop!

#2 -- actually my mom read me the second book (The Dark is Rising) when I was still young enough to have my mom read to me at bedtime.  This series sparked an obsession with Arthurian legend that lasted through my teens, including me getting a chance to go to England and Wales when I was 13.

#3 -- best princess series ever, everyone else go home.

#4 -- this is the second book in a series, but it's my favorite.  It involves a young girl (12-13?) who gets herself into a situation where she has to sacrifice herself to save the world.  There's a lot of good stuff in here about the emotional impact of that decision and it really made me think for a long time.  (Also, people turn into whales.)

#5 -- actually read this one as assigned reading in high school, when I was already deep into fandom.  I was really drawn in by the obsession storyline, and while I haven't ever reread it, I feel like it had a big impact on some of my writing.  Also the copy we had in school had a short story called "The Secret Sharer" coupled with it which was the slashiest short story ever.

#6 -- I've read all of Flewelling's books, but this one is the one that sticks out.  It has the most creeptastic intro/backstory ever, including murdering a baby who then turns into a demonic ghost who is blood-bound to his surviving twin sister.  The image of a bloody baby-sized handprint on the wall stuck with me for a long time.

#7 -- I think while this book wraps up a whole lot of my favorite tropes, what sticks out about it for me is that this was the first time I read an actual published book with all that stuff in it.  You mean, enough people are interested in reading about BDSM that it can actually get published?  Also, the whole series involves a lot of different cultures and religions which I find fascinating.

#8 -- This is, quite possibly, one of the most beautifully written books I've ever read.  It is also horrifying and disturbing, to the point of at least one scene where I actually closed the book and put it down, then reopened it to make sure I actually did just read what I thought I read.  Beautiful writing + horrifying and disturbing is pretty much the key to my heart.

#9 -- I don't often read nonfiction, but I heard good things about this book and was interested in the subject.  After reading it I stopped buying most meat at the grocery store and instead buy nearly all my meat now from a local butcher shop/farm which uses humane farming practices.  In summer I buy most veggies and fruit from farmer's markets.

#10 -- There are very few fantasy novels that I find myself still thinking about days after finishing them.  This is one of them.  I've talked about it here before though so I won't say anything else.

Notably absent from this list are most of my favorite books.  I love them, but I figured this list was more books that I found meaningful in some way other than "I LOVE THIS BOOK."

holy shit i was so drunk. the drain pipes in the apartment above me cracked and my apartment had been flooding with disgusting brown kitchen waste water and all of my dishes and things had gotten covered and there was mold growing on things so I got a quart of bleach, put on my jammie jams, faced a bottle of nebbiolo in like 15 minutes, and just cleaned EVERYTHING.

102. Do you regret anything from your past

Oh god, SO MANY THINGS, most of them relating to getting proper help for my depression and managing college stuff, but I can't really say the way things turned out was bad, so I guess I don't regret it that much. 

9. Does talking about sex make you uncomfortable?

In general? Nope. Sex is fun and lolzy to talk about! Love it. When it comes to me personally, though, my mouth is shut. But I'm a pretty private person in general.

14) If you are outside, what are you most likely doing?

Hmmm. It's hard to say right now because it is COLD AS BALLS out at the moment, so if I'm outside, I'm most likely hating my life and wondering WHY I AM OUTSIDE, but otherwise, going to work, walking places. Once it's spring, though, and up through I physically cannot take it, I am outside as much as will be granted to me. I take my lunch hour outside so I can read out in the sun, I'm on our porch reading with tea/beer/wine, I'm in the backyard, doing similar, I'm in the park, whenever I can. Just call me Harry Styles - if I'm outside, I am likeliest spread-eagled on the ground making grass angels. 

However, soon, I will probably be outside SHOVELING FEET OF SNOW, because it's January and Boston is HUNKERING DOWN for yet more snow. I love snow? And yet I hate snow. We have a very tumultuous relationship. :|

17) What was the last lie you told?

I...can't remember. AND I AM NOT LYING ABOUT THAT.

20) What is your greatest weakness; your greatest strength?

OOF. NOT PULLING ANY PUNCHES. Hmmmm. My greatest weakness is probably not believing in myself enough, and putting way, way, WAY too much stock in other people's opinions. (Just typed that as onions, btw. VERY DIFFERENT, THAT. But stock SHOULD have onions, they add flavor. Just don't steal other people's onions for your stock, I guess? Anyway.) So, yeah. It's a work in progress, and I've gotten better at it since dragging myself out of my 20's (this is what it felt like; BEGONE WITH YOU, 20'S!!) but it's still - yeah. A work in progress. Strength, I think, is I'm good with people. I'm very empathetic, and I give most people the benefit of the doubt. You have to do a lot for me to stop believing in you, IDK. I'm a nice person, generally, I guess! IDK! *HANDS* PLEASE STOP MAKING ME TALK ABOUT MYSELF, oh wait.

Kowalski would have never been on the show if RayV wasn't there first, and it was his friendship with Fraser that got the show uncancelled, since fans liked them together so much. I wish you would acknowledge that RayV exists, and he's an important part of the show.
