Crowcombe Church - Somerset
History-
The Church of the Holy Ghost in Crowcombe, Somerset, has a tower dating from the 14th century with the rest of the building being dated at the 15th century. It has been designated by Historic England as a Grade I listed building.
There was a previous church on the site, possible dating from the Saxon era.
The north chapel is known as the Carew Chapel and was used by the lords of the manor who lived in the nearby Crowcombe Court.
In 1724 the spire was damaged by a lightning strike.
The top section of the spire was removed and is now planted in the churchyard[4] and stone from the spire was used in the flooring of the church.
Inside the church carved bench-ends, dating from 1534, depict such pagan subjects as the Green Man and the legend of the men of Crowcombe fighting a two-headed dragon of Shervage Woods, known as the Gurt Worm.
According to legend the dragon was finally defeated and cut into two halves, the halves forming the Quantock Hills.
Hauntings/ Legends
31 October (reoccurring) or Midsummer Eve
Anyone watching the church at midnight on Halloween would see the spirits of those fated to die over the forthcoming twelve months.
Nearby there is also the tale of The Heddon Oak is sadly no more. On a Sunday in 1986, some men cut it down claiming that it was rotten.
That was not the case.
It was 408 years old when it was unjustly felled.
Legend has that six West Somerset men who were part of the Duke of Monmouths men - and fugitives from the battle at Sedgemoor - were hanged at Heddon Oak.
After hanging they were tarred and quartered in the field above Heddon Oak, this is known as Blood Field.
Prior to the tree being cut down, people had reported the sounds of horses, creaking leather and men breathing heavily, before the sounds of strangulation.
Some reported a sensation of being choked when they walked past the tree.
Whether this still occurs now that the Heddon Oak has been cut down, would be interesting to know.?
