A long day, as always was. Ebenezer was packing away his things and preparing for a warm night sitting at the fire.
“Come, Prudence.” He beckoned, dusting off his coat and picking away at any imperfections. When the dog didn’t respond, he repeated himself in irritation,
“Prudence, come. We’re going home.”
Again, no response. The mastiff lie in her basket, unmoving.
“Prudence?” He asked again, slowly turning on his heel to approach, this time with more concern. He knew she had been poorly as of late, but had only suspected it as the cold weather making everyone feel such. When he looked upon her limp body, shock and despair struck his heart. He immediately knelt at her side, picking up her head in his hands as he shook it. It couldn’t be — She’d been alright only hours ago. “Prudence!”
Prudence let out a whine, trying hard to respond as she paced her body. She attempted frantically to paw at him, to get his attention. Something. Anything.
“I’m here! I’m right here!” She barked, jumping around him. “Look at me!”
