It's so cool that Cryptid Hearts takes place in Mount Rainier! Can you tell me a bit about why you chose this location and what its significance is to the story?
I decided that I wanted Bes's last name to be Washington, and then decided Toby was the right amount of corny to have that be how he chose the destination of their road trip.
He's going to Washington with Bes Washington, you know?
I picked Mount Rainier as their first/main destination because I think it's gorgeous, and it has a lot of really fun 'settings' within the one setting. The flower fields, the lookout tower, the campgrounds--and it has a lot of interesting spots nearby, so I was able to map out the rest of the roadtrip pretty easily.
Plus, it's Bigfoot Country! And that is very important.
It’s hard to get away from grief when it’s stained into the walls of your home, when it’s in every family photograph, when it’s in every trail you’ve ever walked.
On grief and love.

“No wait! Don’t take pictures of this!” Hopping around on one leg, Toby practically rips his converse off and tosses it higher onto the bank. “You know I can’t stand wet socks. It’s already got me gagging.” The sock follows suit. Bes snaps picture after picture, laughing as he drops down into the soft, laurel-green grass. “Keep dancing, Toby! I’m loving this look on you!”

Highlightable section from Cryptid Hearts!
As it turns out, it’s difficult to come up with a particularly convincing way to tell someone—even your best friend—that you spent your savings on a van because you thought going to a different state was better than investing in an online therapist.
Bes has set up a modest picnic of canned chili, sandwiches, and half-crushed bags of chips, all laid out on a spread of blankets near the fire pit, under a sky heavy with stars. Toby tears open a bag of nacho cheese chips, plopping down beside Bes on the blanket. “Ah, the fine cuisine of outdoor life,” he declares, taking a dramatic whiff of the chips. “High-class dining under the stars.”
