me, a romance writer, writing romance:
and then and then her cheeks. turned. Red. for the fifth time in this paragraph. ❤️
Her eyes pleaded for more of him, hungry & unyielding... while honey dripped down her thighs. Her moans swallowed by his kiss.
There, heaven existed. A devil & a saint entwined... stoking the flames of desire.

Writing slow burn is slowly killing me.
I need to know this as a romance writer
do you fall for the characters first… or the tension between them?
like is it about them as people, or that slow build where something’s clearly there but no one says it yet
because for me, once the tension hits right, everything else just follows

✨Introduction Post✨
I'm not new to tumblr but I am new to this blog, so an introduction feels appropriate.
🪻🪻🪻 Hi! I'm Rowen. I write monster romance, read monster romance, and sometimes I make art when the stars align and I remember how my hands work. I'm thirty with three cats, a ton of dead houseplants and a couple of living ones. 🪻🪻🪻

🪻🪻🪻 I am always looking for more writer friends and am constantly in need of peer pressure to stay accountable and keep writing. Will it extend to making art and other creative practices I neglect? No idea but we'll find out together. ✨love you stay safe out there ✨
𝐇𝐎𝐓 𝐓𝐀𝐊𝐄⁰¹: romance between characters who have similar vibes is just as/if not more appealing than opposites attract trope!
as much as i do love an extrovert character with an introvert reader / self-insert oc, i’m way more obsessed with pairings where both people actually have similar energy. like—extrovert4extrovert. freak4freak. two people who both want to go out, party, be loud, take up space, and experience life at full volume together.
because here’s the thing: i don’t just want chaos for chaos’ sake. i want two people who love having fun together, but who are also undeniably human. people who can still sit in the quiet afterward and admit they’re insecure, or exhausted, or scared they’re not enough. and that’s where it gets interesting—when they fall under the same “extrovert” umbrella, but they cope differently. one masks with humor, the other with self-destructive recklessness. one craves the reassurance of commanding attention, the other plays down their struggles to help others. their vulnerabilities don’t always align, but the recognition does.
there’s something so compelling about characters who look like they have it all together on the outside, yet see themselves reflected in each other’s cracks. they’re facing similar pressures, similar expectations, similar fears of slowing down or being forgotten—and instead of clashing, they choose to help. not because they’re opposites who magically balance each other out, but because they understand the problem from the inside.
and yeah, i get the appeal of “opposites attract.” it sparks fast, it’s dramatic, it’s cute. nerd and jock. sunshine and grump. extrovert and introvert. that friction can be fun, and it makes for great meet-cutes. but long-term? i love stories where the connection comes from shared rhythms. shared interests. shared ways of moving through the world. because at some point, you can’t build a life with someone you’re constantly pushing against.
that’s why i’m such a sucker for grump4grump or sunshine4sunshine. two people who get each other. who don’t have to explain why they need noise or stillness or motion. who choose each other every day—not because one “fixes” the other, but because they work together. they grow together. they love loudly, or they love in softer ways they can both digest. but always deliberately.
