A recent guest post on Language Log is an open letter to Neil deGrasse Tyson about the role of linguists versus cryptographers in Arrival:
As fellow scientists, we linguists appreciate the work you do as a spokesperson for science. However, your recent tweet about the film Arrival perpetuates a common misunderstanding about what linguistics is and what linguists do:
In the @ArrivalMovie I'd chose a Cryptographer & Astrobiologist to talk to the aliens, not a Linguist & Theoretical Physicist
Neil deGrasse Tyson (@neiltyson), 1:40 PM – 26 Feb 2017
Though the term linguist is often used by the public to refer generally to anyone whose occupation is related to language (especially translators and interpreters), the type depicted in Arrival is a special kind of linguist who engages in the scientific study of human language: its structures, its uses, its underlying similarities, and its surprising diversity. A cryptographer simply cannot replicate the specialized training that a linguist like Louise Banks has, which takes years to learn and decades to master.
Most importantly, a cryptanalyst would likely be much less suited to the task of communicating with aliens than a linguist would (a cryptographer even less so, since they work on encryption, not decryption). Cryptanalysis relies on decrypting coded messages from a known language. If the source language and the encryption method are both unknown, ordinary cryptanalytic methods will fail. This is why the Native American code talkers of the 20th century were so invaluable to the US in both world wars: their languages were not understood by enemy cryptanalysts, so their encrypted versions could not be cracked, unlike with well-known languages like English.

The Satoshi Secret: Adam Back Rejects NYT's Bitcoin Creator Report
Key Takeaways A New York Times investigation by renowned journalist John Carreyrou suggests British cryptographer Adam Back could be the elusive Satoshi Nakamoto, utilizing advanced AI for stylometric analysis of early crypto communications. Back, a foundational figure in cryptography known for creating Hashcash (a direct precursor to Bitcoin’s proof-of-work) and co-founding Blockstream,…
The Butter Cow Code
A Jimmy Olsen Mystery from the AI mind of Jimmy Olsen (Former radio personality, current podcaster, reluctant private investigator, and—on this particular Tuesday—smelling faintly of cream) ⸻ I was standing face-to-face with the Butter Cow when she winked at me. Now, before you call the authorities—or a therapist—let me clarify. The Butter Cow did not wink in the traditional, ocular sense.…
The Solution to the Kryptos Puzzle: Up for Auction Soon!
Image courtesy of Kryptos.arcticus.com Kryptos. No, sorry, we’re not doing a post about Superman’s dog. Instead, today we’re discussing how the solution to one of the great unsolved cryptographic mysteries of our time is going up for auction in October. For the uninitiated, Kryptos is a flowing sculpture made of petrified wood and copper plating, sitting over a small pool of water. It was…

How to Become a Cryptographer | Requirements for Cryptographer | Arya College
What are the steps need to become a cryptographer?
The person responsible for the analysis and interpretation of information is known as a Cryptologist or Cryptographer. They are expert in decoding coded messages and have excellent skills in mathematics as well as linguistics. Cryptologists are an expert in creating encoded messages.
They can work with the government’s defense departments or with companies that need to encrypt sensitive information. Cryptologists generally expect to work on deadlines. They may need to spend more hours at work than at home.
Job responsibilities of a cryptographer
A cryptographer puts security systems and algorithms into code. This job basically demands encryption of the information that considers sensitive. They have to code information in such a manner that hackers and cybercriminals cannot break it. Companies offer absolute control of the codes to cryptographers and in the process increase their responsibilities. The responsibilities assigned to a cryptographer may vary from organization to organization. But there are some primary responsibilities that cryptographer experts must perform:
Ensure the protection of financial data and other sensitive information and make them available only to authorized individuals only.
Design a robust security system that protects it against any exposure.
Make sure that sensitive information is safe from any cyber threat including being edited, copied, or deleted.
Utilizing statistical and mathematical formulas analyze data to identify any potential security threats
Regularly test systems to identify any threat or vulnerability and keep the systems updated and reliable.
What are the educational requirements of a cryptographer?
It is imperative to do your research before deciding to become a cryptographer. Schooling is very important and certainly obtaining a technical degree is essential. A cryptographer should at least have a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science Engineering, Computer Science or Mathematics. There are a few employers who would hire you for your skills even if you do not have a technical degree. An individual needs to prepare to demonstrate the skills and expertise employers would expect from a cryptographer with a technical degree.
Work experience
The type of work experience students of Top Engineering Colleges need to become a cryptographer for any organization depends mainly on the position they are applying for as well as the employer they wish to work for. There are some positions that would demand at least five years of experience and a master’s degree. Also, there are some positions that would accept two to three years of experience for a similar position.
For instance, if an individual wishes to work for the National Security Agencies, then they have to have a very strong background in cryptography to support their job application. For cryptographers, it is not easy to get to their desired positions instantly. They have to work hard to get to the top and get recognition.
