My story. ish

I have a big passion for the military. I joined a program called Young Marines when I was 11 years old and ever since then I wanted to join the Marine Corps. It’s a pretty simple way to go, I thought. I couldn’t picture me doing anything else with a fancy degree. I joined ROTC in high school. I trained in boxing to stay in shape. By senior year I became the Executive Officer and was the Air Rifle team commander and placed 24th in the NJROTC National Air Rifle competition. Not the typical female but I loved it. Earned too many medals and awards for my own good.  The most exciting thing for me was meeting one of the last three WWI veterans at the Arlington cemetery.  These were just one of the amazing trips I was able to experience that most high school kids don’t get.

The weekend I was supposed to leave for boot camp, I had a rash on the side of my body. They postponed my date to leave until I had it checked out and cleared. My doctor told them it was eczema and I was immediately disqualified. Despite the fact that it wasn’t really eczema but a fungus from the mixture of the cold weather making my skin dry and me being gross while training at the gym. Of course I went to get a second opinion from my dermatologist to have it in writing that I’m fine. I waited and waited for me to be able to leave. But nothing’s happened.

Long story short I lost a shot at a $250,000 Marine Corps scholarship. Made it to the waiting list for the Naval Academy Prep School. Received a congressional nomination for West Point but never actually got a piece of it. For some kids getting out of high school, they join because they never really thought about their future till the end of senior year or they wanted to use the military for school but me, that was my dream and all I ever wanted. I could not picture doing anything else; I would have done it for free.

For two years now I’ve been struggling and trying figure out where I’m supposed to be. I’m living paycheck to paycheck just to get by. When everyone went forward after graduation I took a few steps back.  Instead of learning Arabic to be a Cryptologic Linguist (this was going to be my MOS), I’m on my couch looking for ways to make money.

But I can promise you this, I’ll find my way out.

I’ve never done this blogging thing before. But hopefully it can help me out a bit. This isn’t the whole detailed story, maybe I’ll go deeper one day.   I don’t mind answering questions anymore. If I had a dollar for every time a friend asked “Aren’t you supposed to be in the Marines?” I wouldn't be blogging. So if you want, ask away.  Have a good night.
