Great Tracks We Heard in June
AUDIO | I’ve Been Trying by DJ Shadow
When DJ Shadow started, with 1996’s classic “Endtroducing…” he was highly influential in the trip hop genre | It was an album which very much used hip hop as its engine, but incorporated a world of sound (indeed samples) that made it so much more | He maintains that element to this day, but “I’ve Been Trying” from upcoming album “The Less You Know, The Better” sounds more like a classic blues number from the Deep South | It seems Shadow is moving back in time with black America’s huge musical legacy | Case in point: the 2006 single “This Time (I’m Gonna Try It My Way)” which had elements of funk and even disco, without losing its modern polish | Regardless, it’s hard not to salivate at the prospect of a new Shadow album, which is set to arrive September.
MUSIC.VIDEO | Ma3gool by Alaa Wardi
Saudi Arabian singer Alaa Wardi’s videos have been blowing up recently in the Middle East | This is a great acapella track, with percussion which Alaa does vocally, using parts of his body, and even scratching his beard | Refreshingly, the song is reliant on the video for the full experience (a rare thing these days) | It is also, of course, a showcase for the amazing audio and video production software that is within everyone’s reach.
MUSIC.VIDEO | Slow Slow by Sound of Rum
This song is a true testimony to Kate Tempest gift for lyrics | The new alternative hip hop band consists of a trio, boasting influences from jazz and soul | We guarentee they'll tingle your intellect and give you a rather pleasent mental jolt.
VIDEO | Boohey Baarian by Hari and Sukhmani
You might remember this duo from our Blogsong on the desi community | They combine traditional Indian elements with electronic beats and have garnered a respectable fan base in India | On a more conceptual level, they typically will remix folk music and deliver well-rounded, ambient music.
AUDIO | Crystalline by Bjork
Bjork makes for another significant 90s artist who is now reaching middle age | She has always been highly experimental, and in this regard her musical career seemed to follow an arc, peaking with 2004’s acapella “Medulla” | Following this, 2007’s “Volta” was viewed by some as a disappointment; it was in many ways a traditional Bjork album, with many qualities you would expect from the older records | Simply put an experimental step backwards… which could make Bjork something of a victim of her own creativity | “Crystalline” is a new single from the upcoming “Biophilia” album is similarly classic Bjork, with beats, bizarre and often childlike electronics, and impassioned vocals | It’s also great listening. The question is therefore if we can enjoy great song writing and production without the continual need for reinvention…the new album arrives September.
