I have this hc of Keith being able to understand Spanish but not being able to understand Lance´s accent.

I think that because he spent time in various foster care facilities and lived in an area with a large number of Spanish speakers, he was either taught or forced to learn it (thinking about him as if he was born and lived in Texas).

He may even have been placed with foster families who were Latino or Spanish-speaking, and he probably got used to hearing the Mexican accent and become able to understand it, maybe not the best speaking it, but still, he could defend himself talking just what he need to say.

I also like the idea that he learn Japanese with Shiro at home and since his father was Japanese, he wanted to keep as much from his father as possible.

So here it is, our trilingual boy, stuck in space piloting lions and some day Lance is missing his home and he WANTS to speak Spanish so bad so Keith tell him that he can understand Spanish and Lance starts talking like his life depend on it only for Keith to find out that he can´t fucking understand a word. Hes talking to fast and because the accent hes not sure if the words are what he think they are and maybe when he thinks he understand the context of what Lance is saying he starts using Cuban slang that he doesn't fucking have idea what it meant.

So when Lance finally stop his monologue and look at Keith just found the dumbest stare he has ever seen on him, and IMMEDIATELY bursts out laughing.

Keith spend the rest of the day learning Cuban slang and Cuban pronunciation and even if it is a little overwhelming to him, he really like the way Lance´s eyes light up explaining the meaning behind every word.

Voltron headcanon

Most of the time, Lance isn’t really a morning person. But ever since he was a kid, he had this habit — every July, August, and September, he’d wake up before sunrise and walk down to the beach.

All for one reason: to watch the baby sea turtles hatch and crawl their way to the ocean. And Lance, of course, couldn’t leave until he was sure every single one made it to the water.

When he joined Voltron, he didn’t think much of it at first — just that lately he’d been waking up earlier than usual. Early enough to worry everyone on the castle.

Then one morning, he checks the date.

And suddenly, he understands.

Can someone do a Fanfiction/headcannon about the Voltron team in the training deck,training on their strong points and weak points in their fighting,and when it's lance's turn they blindfold him and stand around him behind targets.The goal of the exercise is to try to hit there targets anywhere on it and there out, (the objective is if he can hit all the targets he should be able to do the same in the battlefield if something is obstructing his vision or heighting his awareness around him) He has to figure out were his teammates are at by simply by their breathing,shifting or a quick noise they'll make and he can not move from the center of the circle.Keith said something snarky and was shocked when Lance quickly, turning towards him and hitting his target perfectly.The others barely make a noise, and he still hits their targets perfectly, even Allura's who's a train warrior,lets just say his team now has full trust in lance's marksmanship.

A mini rant about Voltron’s failure at representation, specifically in regards to voice acting

I feel like one of the ways Voltron completely flopped on its representation end that should be talked about a lot more is how none of their fairly diverse cast had voice actors of the same nationality or ethnicity, with exception to Allura.

I could go on and on about how visual representation is held back majorly when it’s paired with a non-matching (in our case, usually American and white) voice— sure, there’s value in it, but Voltron is a pretty good example of where the mismatch of visual and audio representation can make the former almost obsolete. The paladins all come from places with unique and fairly different accents to each other (Cuba, Samoa, Japan, Italy— though Pidge may more likely be Italian-American since she seems to have grown up close to the garrison, similarly w/ Shiro who definitely lived in the US for a couple years as a garrison teacher whether or not he grew up in Japan), the omission of their native accents makes it SO easy to forget the representation they’re trying to bring to the forefront.

Especially when it comes to lance, since the VA doesn’t even seem to be able to pronounce some Spanish words properly (go back to s1ep4 and listen to how he says “Varadero”— to me it sounds wrong even according to the English pronunciation of it— va-ruh-deh-ro— he sounds more like he’s saying “veradera” to me), which just further makes the representation feel sloppy and inauthentic.

It genuinely pisses me off that people want to create representation in media but refuse to do the work to make it feel genuine. There is SO much benefit in representing not just different skin colours and nationalities but different accents and voices too— they’re such an integral part of what makes up culture across the world and yet they go ignored half the time when it comes to the issue of representation.

It seriously makes me consider organising some kind of redub of Voltron with all of the paladins’ actual native accents in it. Just to prove my point about the impact of representation in voice acting. Honestly, if people are interested in that please reach out, I’d love to finally see that happen.

welcome the the tenth fic rec friday! where, on friday, i rec five of my favourite fics.

1. i was always yours (even before you knew it) by paladarns

Lance thought Keith was just an asshole. Lance has always thought of Keith as an asshole, all throughout traveling into space in a large mechanical lion, all throughout bonding moments. All throughout becoming closer as teammates and friends.

Even now, with his hands pinned above his head and Keith’s thighs straddling his waist, Lance thinks Keith is an asshole.

Lance had always thought he could see right through people, but now he’s starting to think he has a bad judgement of people.

2. Wake Up, Sleephyhead! by @transbakugou

Keith has never loved someone like he loves Lance. Lance is his sun, his stars, his happiness. Their hands fit together like they were created to do nothing but hold each other, and he fits perfectly inside of Lance's arms. But he can never let anyone find out how much he loves this boy, how wholly and endlessly. Who knows what the Galra would do with that kind of information?

One morning, the lie comes crashing down around them.

Maybe it won't be as bad as they feared.

i love gay whipped klance and truly every single fic that has ever been written based on a vine is truly amazing, this fic is no exception. also secret relationship lol i am a sucker

3. Something Secret by @kingswriting

It was funny at first. Their arguments became more banter than actual disagreements, yet the entire team continued to assume they were at each other’s throats.

And Lance knows they’re not. He is fully aware that every sharp word, every sly smirk, every heavy handed push, and everything in between is anything but malicious.

But that doesn’t mean he doesn’t miss the softer side of things.

Or, Lance and Keith are in a secret relationship, but honestly want to omit the 'secret' part.

okay u can always tell what tag im following obsessively at certain times lol. for yall i present yet another secret relationship fic. ahem. this one is cute! banter and flirting and misleading and kisses and GOD its so sweet

4. Things Held Sacred by yarrie

So maybe, just maybe, Pidge was right. Maybe, just maybe, Keith had shot himself in the foot with his first attempt at resolving the blanket-hogging situation, because now Lance seemed to think it was a game and the rules were: steal the blankets, get sex.

To be fair, Keith hadn't exactly been...dissuading him very well.

okay so heres how this works. every fic rec friday so far has been from a specific collection of mine called ‘rereadables’, which was literally started because of this fic. i dont even know what specific part of this fic gets to me so hard, but you know when you read something that makes your stomach go all swoopy? and you can’t stop smiling? thats this fic! i remember i finished it for the first time and then i scrolled right back up to the top and read it again, then again, and again. like i cannot get over this fic. it gives me butterflies every time

5. Communication is key, they say by @ellana17

They already had communication issues before… Or: a malfunction with a healing pod leaves Lance able to speak only Spanish for a few days.

the idea of lance getting stuck in spanish and then almost immediately using that to flirt with keith without him knowing. like. i love that SO much that is quite possibly one of the funniest concepts to exist

When Lance starts ditching the Paladins' regular meetings, Keith gets worried and goes to his house to check on him.

The Voltron Rant - Or My Issues with the Portrayal of Lance

Voltron.

I jokingly refer to this as my trauma. Because watching Voltron and being in the fandom as it self-destructed was sort of traumatic. Anyhoots, I wanna talk about one character: Lance.

Voltron was a show that was diverse and about found family which is my type of shit. Not to be obnoxious, but as a Latina I tend to look for latine characters in media especially when I was teenager. 

Lance was one of my favorite characters. Not just because he was Latino-coded and Cuban according to the paladin handbook but because he was relatable. He was a funny guy who talks himself out of trouble and struggled with his insecurities. Once again my type of shit. Him being latino-coded was like the icing on cake for me.

And then the show just kept going.

As the show declined in narrative quality, I felt as if the portrayal of Lance declined in an almost detrimentally stereotypical way.

For instance, Lance referred to himself as a player or a lover boy. But, in the first few seasons, it was suggested that he wasn't really. For me, I thought this was a push against the Latin Lover Stereotype.

For those who are unfamiliar, this stereotype was popularized in early Hollywood with Latino/Spanish actors and excotized them. It led to the stereotype of Latin men being passionate and romantic and great lovers. It's not necessarily bad but it does tend to lead to fetishizing of Latino men. It reduces their characters to be based on pure physicality and ignores any other part of their character.

So imagine my reaction to the showrunners leaning into this exact stereotype as the show progressed from the other characters calling him "lover boy lance" to the paladin show where he does this whole sexually powered ariel dance routine. It was weird for me but it wasn't necessarily painful or damaging. But I still think it's worth pointing out as Lance's later character in season 8 is revolved around his relationship with Allura.

Moving on, the slap to the face for me is Lance's epilogue.

Lance is a farmer.

The only Latino character on this show becomes a farmer.

If that is not upsetting to you let me unpack that.

First off, I'm not saying farming is a bad thing. I come from a family of farmers and ranchers and field pickers. It's a position that's commonly associated with Latine and mostly Mexican immigrants in the US.

However, Lance made no verbal declarations that he wanted to be a farmer. That he missed farm life. All we know about his experience is that he knows how to milk a cow.

What we do know, is that Lance wanted to be a pilot. He loves being a pilot. He was honored to be chosen by the blue lion. He was heartbroken when she shut him out. Lance wanted to be a top pilot. He wanted to be the team's sharpshooter. In a way, he wanted to be a defender of the universe.

So I get, him turning away from fighting/being a soldier after the Galra are defeated and Allura dies. I don't understand him becoming a farmer. There was no set up that he loved farming like Hunk loved cooking.

It felt to me, like the showrunners said Latino + farmer sounds good!! There was no consideration for the Latine children/teenagers watching this show and trying to find their representation.

Further-fucking-more, it suggests that Lance's goals and motivations were tied solely to Allura. Which flashback to the earlier section is just reinstating the latino lover stereotype. That there is nothing more to him than his sexuality. 

I hope this doesn’t come off vengeful and hateful, it wasn’t my intent. Voltron maligned a lot of people hoping to see representation. This is how they upset me and why it leaves a bitter taste in my mouth. Why even voltron fanfiction is hard for me to swallow. I don’t see anyone talking about this flaw in the show so I wanted to put my piece out there.
