Leaving Hermitcraft-an Ode to Cubehamster

We've talked a lot about server firsts on this blog, and we've made a big big deal of the ogs-the founding group and the first people to join.

But have we ever talked about the first person to leave?

Cubehamster was/is a Danish content creator and Redstone genius extraordinaire, and was the first player invited by Xisuma to Hermitcraft as his courtesy in August 2012. The two appeared very similar in a lot of respects; innovators at heart, they were of the same mind when it came to the technicalities of the game. But where they differed was Cube's downfall-Xisuma's preferability to be left alone was only surface level, while a combination of language barrier and difference in playstyle made Cube an all-around prickly person to mess around with. Didn't help that he was an incredibly dangerous shot with a bow and much preferred it to the blade.

In a pattern that we will see time and time again with the shorter-lived members of the server, vanilla survival just wasn't Cube's style. His niche (like Doc's) was in game manipulation, and a great deal of what remains of him on the Hermitcraft map is in the hulking shells of the sand generators he invented. But dealing in glitches is a tricky trade, and Cube often talked about how much he and Dinnerbone respectfully clashed over the constant updates and patches to the game in the first year after its official release.

This theme of quietly clashing and being left out runs through most of Cube's content on Hermitcraft as he struggles to find his place among the extremely diverse cast of characters, and is very similar to Static (a similarly short-lived Australian member)'s story . Much of this clearly had to do with timezones, as time goes on and we see more exotic locations get eliminated from the whitelist due to lack of easy communication and common playtimes. However, there's a bit more to it than that.

Cube was more than once reprimanded behind the scenes for griefing, although it was never malicious and can easily be chalked up to lack of understanding of general server etiquette and/or accidents (damn firetick). But destruction of property, especially community property, became a thread that only wound tighter as time went on, and his final episode sees Cubehamster stealing one of the community nether portals, burning down Xisuma's chicken farm and roasting all of the chickens. His intention in this video was to pack up shop at the spawn village where he had been living for months and move on with his life, out to a remote location like the rest of the Hermits where he could make a fresh start.

He never got that far. Cube's last moments on the Hermitcraft server see him logging out lost in the nether, thousands of blocks from spawn with no direction and even less of a plan. There are a million reasons why he could have chosen to not come back-the story I've chosen to tell here only summarizes the signs that I personally saw coming over the horizon. But just before he left, he talked about a new initiative that he was going to help develop that was introduced at Minecon that year: Minecraft for Educators.

Cubehamster was a good person, and a technical genius to boot. It goes without saying that he went on to do other amazing things. But it takes the right kind of person to click right in with the community that is Hermitcraft, and as that community grows and changes so too do the people it attracts. And so too, do the people it leaves behind.

New Clash of the Creators!

The only footage I’ve seen so far (other than the odd chat message) of the devs on Hermitcraft is a thirty second clip from Cubehamster, who was tragically the only member not invited to the “give Dinnerbone a welcome tour of the server” party and accidentally stumbled upon the group at spawn.

Considering he got yelled at for “griefing” Sp00n’s melon farm earlier that same week-breaking it in a subtle way that he wouldn’t know how to fix to get him back for covering every AFK player with melons-I get the feeling Cube wasn’t exactly the most popular member of S1. He only made 6 episodes from the server total and disappeared never to be seen again.

Unfortunate really, because he was easily one of the greatest redstone geniuses they could have had at the time. He just wasn’t cut out for SMP life, and that’s okay! It’s not for everybody. I commend him for giving it a try.
