you hadn’t planned on spending your saturday in a nearly empty convenience store, but here you are — standing in front of the ramen aisle with a hood half-soaked from the unexpected downpour and jaehyun next to you, reading instant noodle labels like it’s life or death.
“you’re taking this very seriously,” you murmur, arms crossed.
he doesn’t even look up. “you can’t just pick any ramen. there’s science behind it.”
you blink. “science.”
he finally looks at you, deadpan. “spice level, texture, time-to-softness ratio. you think this is a joke?”
you snort. “i think you’re being dramatic over cup noodles.”
“wow,” he says, tossing one into your basket with a hand over his heart. “disrespect.”
it’s always like this with jaehyun — sarcastic, dry humor laced with just enough charm to make you forget you’re supposed to be annoyed. even now, in the fluorescent lighting with the faint buzz of the fridge behind you, he still manages to look unfairly good: hoodie pulled up over dark hair, sleeves pushed to the elbows, hands casually stuffed in his pockets when he’s not play-fighting over snacks.
“you’re lucky i even agreed to come with you,” you say, nudging his shoulder as you both wander down the aisle.
“you literally texted me first,” he replies without missing a beat.
“to say i was bored.”
“which is code for ‘i missed you.’”
you roll your eyes, but your cheeks betray you — and he sees it. he always sees it. jaehyun doesn’t push, though. he just smiles to himself, like that tiny win is enough for now.
you end up back at your place because the rain hasn’t let up, and jaehyun shrugs like, guess i live here now. he’s sitting cross-legged on your floor while you wait for the ramen to cook, flipping through your phone like it’s his.
“you have terrible music taste,” he announces.
“you’re lucky i don’t kick you out.”
“you wouldn’t. it’s cold out there. and i’m charming.”
you pretend to gag but end up laughing, and somehow, the tension that’s always lightly humming between you — that maybe-is-this-more feeling — rises just a notch.
when the noodles are ready, he insists on feeding you the first bite.
“say ah.”
“you’re a menace.”
but you do it anyway, and he grins like it’s the best thing that’s happened to him all day.
later, when the rain is still falling and you’re both sprawled on the floor, bowls long empty and some random playlist echoing softly, he looks over at you.
“so... if this were a date, hypothetically, would it be a good one?”
you glance over at him. the way he’s looking at you — soft, playful, hopeful in that quiet, boyish way — makes your heart do something reckless.
“hypothetically?” you echo.
“hypothetically.”
you smile. “yeah. best date i’ve ever had.”
he grins, turning his head back to the ceiling.
“cool,” he says. “we should do more hypotheticals, then.”
