I had a midlife crisis at 16. You could say. It was pretty bad, an entire depression + identity crisis, you know the whole shebang and all which is why I like to call it that (don't worry I'm better than ever now)

I am the philsophical type, and think a lot. As a result, I am completely and utterly unafraid of death. Yay!

Still obsessed with having a rat as a pet. My mom won't let me and my sis have one tho

My pronouns technically don't matter, but I was born male I guess. More importantly, I for some reason think it would be funny if everybody referred to me by any pronoun besides "he/him".

I identify as a Korean-American, through and through, as not two halves but two wholes. I'm also technically panromantic+pansexual because I wanted to join in on the fun after reading gay shii /j

In reality I'm a starry-eyed romantic. I want to meet the love of my life and it doesn't matter who <3

I'm really glad the anime kept this in. I was worried they might not. This is the turning point for I'm in Love with the Villainess, where it becomes clear it's not just a silly isekai comedy, but a story that also earnestly discusses queer issues.

It's still fairly unusual for the kind of yuri that gets adapted to anime to outright have characters say "I'm gay", so the fact Rae frankly discusses her sexuality here is refreshing-- but on top of that, the show goes on to directly challenge homophobia.

Rae's behavior with Claire before this has been inappropriate (and they really should have toned it down in adaptations to make this convo work better, but alas) and that is acknowledged here. However, Claire moving away from Rae specifically because Rae states that she's gay is what's pointed out wrong, and the stereotype of "lesbians just can't control themselves and will creep on every woman they meet" is pointed out as wrong. This is a common stereotype that persists pretty much everywhere--the idea that it isn't "safe" for women to be around lesbians--and it is valuable that it's called out here. Gay people aren't more likely to be predatory that straight people, and that's something everyone should get through their heads.

What's more, the idea of "oh she's not gay or bi she just happened to fall in love with a woman" or "it's just a love that transcends gender" isn't a super common stereotype in the US and a lot of other countries, but it is one that pops up constantly in anime and manga, because it's seen as somehow "more okay" for a character to kiss girls if she goes out of her way to say it doesn't make her a lesbian or bi/pan. (In the novel Rae does internally mention that bisexual people exist, btw, but she's just not one of them).

So Rae bluntly saying "no gender does matter to me. I'm a lesbian. I'm only attracted to women" is refreshing. "Oh she just fell in love with that one special girl, no reflection on her sexuality whatsoever" being called out as it's own form of prejudice is a pretty big deal.

Guys I had a revelation that the perspective and writing style of the authors I love reading that allows for unreliable narrators basically boils down to a narrator telling what is happening IN THE MOMENT to the reader, without acknowledging that the reader exists. This would end up being tangents, some exposition that you can imagine goes through a character's head really fast if its in first person, and overall is just someone telling the story to the reader, event by event, with perfect memory of all of the dialogue because it is being explained as it is happening to the characters.

What I'm trying to say is that you can imagine the perspective of storytelling to be like watching a movie with scenes happening, but you are blindfolded or something and whoever it is that has more information on the world is explaining to you what is happening, with added comments for their thoughts.

With the stories I've read, I realize now that this leads to some confusion, since sometimes the character only knows the thoughts going through their head right now, but sometimes they foreshadow by saying I didn't know at the time. Which, as you can imagine, can be confusing if you're trying to analyze a story like I was while reminiscing and reading I'm in Love with the Villainess again.
