The Cups & FE3H
The Cups suit are about intuition, emotion, and relationships. Whereas Wands represent ambition and fulfilment of self-actualisation needs, Cups represent the fulfilment of emotional needs. In the standard card set, Cups would correspond with Hearts.
When drawing a Cups card, they will most likely pertain to love, family, and matters of faith. If Wands can represent a walking stick, helping you move forward in life, Cups represent our own heart, holding the sacred water that nurtures us and sustains us. For the tarot card reader, emotional and spiritual needs are the things that can most fulfil existence and give purpose to our lives.
Seeing as the Cups card has such a strong connection to faith, it’s no surprise that I will connect the Cups suit to the Church of Seiros and Garreg Mach Monastery. I group these two together, as the Church of Seiros runs the monastery as well as the military academy, and the two form a faction together in Silver Snow.
Garreg Mach Monastery is a place of deep memory. Its lifespan is nearly a thousand years, and holds the crypt where the goddess of Fòdlan sleeps. It is also mysterious, since the grounds are so old that no one knows all of its secrets. Finally, it is a place where long-lasting relationships are wrought, especially thanks to the military academy whose original purpose was to bring the three nations together.
This makes the monastery a place filled with love, belonging, and faith. Feelings of love and belonging correspond very closely with emotional fulfilment and a sense of having emotional and spiritual needs met. In addition, a large part of the Cups suit is in faith of the unseen, since the cups themselves are opaque. This tracks well with the Church of Seiros devoting their faith to a dead goddess that can no longer be seen nor heard, yet still garners the love of her followers.
