I’ve played a bunch of games in the past year that are (predictably, there’s a lot of them out there; it’s a fairly obvious twist so I don’t blame a bunch of devs for throwing their hats in the ring) all trying to be “Balatro, but with letters” and I think the one that’s grabbing me the most so far is Cursed Words because it goes far enough leaning into “wow, this really doesn’t resemble anything about what we started with, huh” but doesn’t just collapse into The One Best Strategy like Wordatro does.
make no mistake, Cursed Words does require you to be able to spell, but it also requires you to be willing to surrender to chaos, and at the end of the game you aren’t going to care much about spelling. With a lot of the characters, by the end of the game you literally will have no idea what word you’re spelling before it goes off because half of the game is based around using increasingly unhinged wildcard rules. This is good and expected. But yeah, eventually you’ll just be stringing together nine or ten wildcards while the game desperately tries to figure out what you “meant,” and of course you’ll be rolling in points as a result. Which, really, is kind of all we want from this kind of game sometimes.
I also like that the different characters feel super different, and while I’ve only tried a few of the challenge runs, they are plentiful and seem absolutely bastardly.

Today in: Game mechanics I really enjoyed. I've been playing "Cursed Words", which is sort of like Mark Brown's Wordplay, except more Balatro. Its a roguelike version of Boggle. (though with Scrabble scoring). I have some feedback, Final boss is way too constricting to feel remotely fair, and Bones the dog can play dead for all I care. But what I really liked is that there are certain stamps that let you turn your input-words into power. For example, there is a notebook that starts with no effect. But it upgrades whenever you write an in-game colour. (Void, Gold, Red, Blue, Shiny). And then, whenever you get a new grid from then on, it turns one tile into the colour you typed. Type gold twice? Two gold tiles. Type void three times and gold once? Three void, one gold. It also has a Chess Set variant i have discovered, that lets you write chesspieces. And a microphone that lets you type items and stamps (which is honestly game-breaking. You know what you can do with a free Oden, Steak, Broom and Burrito?) What i like most, besides its obviously intuitive concept, is the way it actually disincentivises the Freebie/Joker-type tiles. And forces you to pay attention to expendable tiles in the shop. By which i mean: Lets say i have the stamp that spawns chesspieces. I want knights because its the only piece that doesnt block itself. I cannot rely on 6 "?" tiles, because the game will choose between "Knight" and "Bishop", both of which are 6-letter words. So as my board fills with knights, i will have to actively look for the letters K, N, I, G, H, T in the store. Its a genuinely lovely little way that the feedback-loop pushes you towards a different part of the store.
