A/N: Here we get Riley's POV of the events leading up to her wedding.
My other stuff: Master List.
Riley
Five days ago….
“Is everything to your liking Your Majesty?”
Sliding her sunglasses off as she watched a dozen servants deposit her luggage, she responded, “Everything is fine, and you can just call me Riley.”
“Oh, no, Your Majesty. I would never presume to such a thing!” The maid curtsied again as she left the room.
When the door closed behind the last one, Riley flung herself onto the bed. At least it was plush. She wondered if she could request a different maid. The one assigned to her was a little too respectful for her taste. She really didn’t care about titles; she’d give anything to have someone interact with her like she was a real person. But no, even if she explained that the girl had done nothing wrong, it could still reflect poorly on her with her supervisor.
She heaved a great sigh as she stared at the ceiling. Maybe she could send for her favorite maid from back home. Everyone would understand that because it would look like an entitled thing to do. Import your own maid because she’s customized, already programed to know your preferences. They would assume she was spoiled, when the truth was that she was lonely, and Anabelle had always been kind and talked to her like she was a real person. She could use a friend.
She rolled over on the bed and cried.
Four days ago….
“How are you settling in?” The prince asked her as they sat at the breakfast table with his parents and brother.
It was the second time she’d met him. The first had been at the engagement party held in Monterisso. She’d spoken to him for less than five minutes that night.
“Oh, fine, thank you. I found the library and the piano room. I was hoping to explore the grounds today.”
“Excellent! Just let your personal maid if you require anything else. One of the guards could escort you around the grounds.”
“A guard? Oh. I was hoping-“
But his attention has already turned back to his father. Within seconds they were deep in a conversation about the day’s agenda.
She turned to the queen with a smile, “Well, you’re going to be my mother-in-law soon. I was thinking we could get to know each other over lunch.”
“I would love to dear!” Regina reached over and patted Riley’s hand.
“Oh, good!” Riley felt the first real smile she’d had on her face in days spread across her face.
“Just have your assistant call mine. I’m sure I have an opening in my schedule one day next month.”
“Oh….sure.” Riley’s face fell. She didn’t even have an assistant yet, that was probably one of the topics of her meeting with the royal council that was scheduled for right after breakfast.
She glanced around the table. The princes older brother gave her sympathetic smile, “I’d be happy to show you around the grounds later.”
“Thank you, I’d like that.”
Maybe she’d have one friend here.
Three days ago……
“Mother!” Riley threw herself into her mother’s embrace.
“Careful dear, don’t wrinkle the dress!” Elizabeth pushed her daughter away.
“Sorry.” She stepped away, looking around, “Where’s father?”
“Off with Constantine I’d imagine, they have business to discuss.”
“Oh. Of course. I was hoping to see him.”
“I’m sure you’ll see him later.”
“Where is everyone else?”
“Who?”
Riley blinked, “Ryder, Jory, Declan, Amelia….”
“Oh dear, your siblings will be here for the wedding, but I didn’t want to deal with their antics for two days until then.”
Riley deflated completely. Her relationship with her mother was distance, at best. It was better with her father, when she could get his attention, but he was a workaholic. She was close to her siblings and had hoped to spend time with them in the days leading up to the wedding.
She’d been away from home before, but never like this. She was in a strange place full of unfamiliar people with no end in sight. This wasn’t a vacation; this was her home now. But it didn’t feel like home. It didn’t have the comforting smells of home; it didn’t have her favorite garden bench or a single dog to cuddle with. It seemed cold and austere to her.
She wanted to be a photographer, not a princess, but her parents would find that silly. No one knew except Anabelle and Ryder. They never made fun of her. Anabelle made a big deal over her photos and Ryder had several of them blown up and framed, hanging in his room. But that had never been encouraged by her parents. She wasn’t sure they even knew she owned a camera.
“Mother, do you think Anabelle would want to come here with me?”
“She might. I’ll talk to your father about it, dear.”
“Thank you!” It was something.
“Now, I must go. I have an appointment with the queen. See you later, dear. Ta!” She swept out of the room, leaving Riley alone. Again.
Apparently, Regina had managed to make room for Elizabeth in her schedule. Leo was nowhere to be found and the maids still treated her like royalty, respectful but distance and formal. She hated it. She really wished she had a dog, or even a cat. Anything that would love her.
Two days ago……
Riley had been at the palace for four days. In those four days she had attended three formal dinners, two formal luncheons, a tea party, a formal breakfast, two garden parties and a formal ball. She’d met all kinds of people, but she hadn’t made a connection with any of them. Most of the ladies she met seemed to fall somewhere between indifferent to her presence to downright hostile about it. She understood that many of them had hoped to become queen and would always resent her. There was nothing she could do about that.
She had spent more time with the royal tailor than she had with all the members of the royal family put together. She’d seen her parents the night before at the formal dinner, but they’d barely spoken to her.
Thoughts of running away were starting to spiral through her head but she knew she wouldn’t do it. She was too much the dutiful daughter, too much the responsible one. She had technically agreed to this arrangement, not that she’d really had much choice. At least the prince was young and good looking. Her parents hadn’t tried to marry her off to some man decades older than her.
She had thought they would get to know each other in the days before the wedding, but she hadn’t seen him outside of meals, and he didn’t make most of those, preferring to work through lunch and often dinner as well.
The palace reminded her of a mausoleum. Big, echoey, lots of marble, no life in it, none at all. Everyone had a stick up their ass, even the servants. It was suffocating.
She missed her brothers; she even missed her annoying little sister. She missed her cat. Fluffy hadn’t been allowed to come become Regina was allergic. She missed the fractious pack of hunting dogs her father kept and the yappy little dog that belonged to her sister. She missed the bright lighting and the warm colors of the rooms at home.
Mostly she missed the comforting sounds of her siblings. The low-level din that seemed to always permeate the house. She’d found it annoying at times, but now she’d give anything to hear Declan and Amelia arguing over the last pastry or Jory blaring his obnoxious music. She loved all of them, but she was closest to Ryder, her junior by eight minutes. He was her twin and he’d been her best friend growing up. She called him every day, but it wasn’t the same.
Riley had been sure she would adjust, given time. She was a generally cheerful person who always looked for, and usually found, the positive in everything. But four days in she was beginning to lose hope.
One day ago……..
She sat at the bar, alone. Tomorrow was her wedding day. She’d spent less than an hour total in her life with the groom. Her own parents were too busy networking to pay any attention to her.
This was her fucking party, yet she was alone. Because it wasn’t her party, not really. None of it was about her. Not the party, not the wedding, not the entire fucking marriage itself.
This was just another formal event in a never ending line of formal events designed for networking and self-promotion. Just another soul sucking, mind numbing, joy killing event in a lifetime of monotony. She looked out over the ballroom at all the people laughing their fake laughs and scheming ways to advance their own social positions.
Her wedding, like this party, like her very existence, was all about other people. All about treaties and diplomacy and alliances. She, herself, was expendable. An undifferentiated cog in soul crushing machine. The only thing that mattered was her last name, her bloodline. If Ryder had been born female, he would have been interchangeable with her. This was her life now.
She suddenly couldn’t breathe.
She ran, tears blurring her vision, right into the waitress. And then everything changed.
A chance encounter on a balcony, a wild escape from the palace, her first motorcycle ride, and the most intense sexual experience of her life later, she was wrapped around a man she just met laying on a hidden beach a thousand miles from home.
She didn’t even know his name and she couldn't ask it now. She shouldn't. It would make it all real. More real than it already was. It was the realest thing that had ever happened to her. But it shouldn’t have happened.
All the reasons she should have never done it crashed through her mind as reality flooded back in. What the hell was she doing? There was no future here. He wasn't her port in the storm, her rock to cling to. He wasn't her future. Her heart clinched with hurt and regret at that realization. Pain spiraled through her, infusing her soul with what she could only describe as grief.
Wedding Day….
She was being a bridezilla and she knew it, but she didn't care. The terrified staff had sent her mother in to try to calm her down. That was the wrong thing to do. Her mother did not have a calming effect on her.
“Get out!” Riley hurled a hairbrush across the room.
Elizabeth ducked and the brush hit the wall behind her head. “Riley, really. You're acting like a petulant child.”
“I don't even know him, Mother! He's barely spoken to me in the week I've been here!”
“One day you may appreciate a husband that leaves you to your own devices, at least you know he’s not controlling.”
“You're not helping, this is the opposite of helping! You don't understand me, you've never understood me! You don't care about my feelings-“
“Riley. You do understand how important this alliance is for Monterisso, right? How much your aunt is depending on this? How much your country needs you?”
“I hate you! Just... I want you to leave. I need Ryder. Just get Ryder in here!”
“Fine, he's the only one you've ever listened to anyway.” Elizabeth gave her a disapproving look as she disappeared out the door.
Riley dropped her head into her hands and cried. She heard the door creak open again. Ryder, this time.
“Hey sis.”
She wiped at her tears, “Did Mom impress upon you the importance of talking me into accepting my fate?”
He gave her a sardonic smirk, “Of course she tried. What's going on, Riley, what's up?”
“I just... Am I really going to marry a man I don't love? One I barely even know?”
Ryder lifted an eyebrow, “Are you really contemplating leaving the crown Prince of Cordonia at the altar?”
“No… yes…. maybe.....”
He shoved his hands in his pockets as he watched her, “I thought you were on board with this?”
“I was, I guess, I mean what else was I going to do with my life? This is exactly what I was raised to do, what I was trained for, hell, it's probably the only reason they had me!”
He made his way across the room and placed a comforting hand on her shoulder, “It's probably the only reason they had any of us, but we agreed a long time ago that what they think doesn't matter, remember?”
She sniffed as she nodded, “Yeah, I remember.”
“So, talk to me. Did something happen? Has he said something, done something? I swear to God Ren,” the use of her childhood nickname occurred whenever he slipped into overprotective brother mode, “if he hurt you in any way-“
“No, it's not that...”
“What is it then?”
“I, kind of met someone...”
“What? Who? When?” Surprise evident his face. They shared everything, if there had been anyone in her life, he would have known about it.
She blinked up at him, knowing how it sounded, “Well, I didn't really catch his name...”
“Wait wait wait! Let me get this straight, you're having second thoughts about a marriage that you agreed to, that will solidify our alliance with Cordonia, giving our country a much needed infusion of funds and the boost our economy needs, over a man whose name you don't even know?” He stared at her like she’d grown a second head, “Where the hell did you meet this guy?”
“At the palace, last night.”
“Last night? Are you serious right now sis?” He shook his head, “I think this is just nerves. Cold feet, pre-wedding jitters. I hear it's quite common, even when you're in love. Take into account the fact that you're not in love, that you've had to move to a new place, that your home sick, I know how you get.... I think it's absolutely normal that you're nervous. But come on. I know you don't really know Liam yet, but I'm sure that will change in time. Can you honestly tell me you know some man you just met last night any better?”
She knew he was making sense, her rational mind told her that everything he was saying was perfectly logical. But yet her heart was screaming at her that he was wrong. She did know him better. She had certainly spent more time with him. It wasn't just the amount of time though, she didn't know how to explain it to Ryder so it would make sense, but her soul had recognized his somehow.
Not that she would even know how to find him again. She hadn't gotten his name, much less his phone number. She’d probably never find him again even if she ran out of the church right now. What was the point? And why hadn't she asked for his name? Maybe her brother was right, this was just nerves, stress. Her fear and anxiety creating fiction. A tempting, but false, narrative that if she broke the engagement somehow this mystery man would show up and sweep her off her feet, that they would ride off into the sunset together and live happily ever after. What a beautiful, wonderful, idea.
But she knew fairy tales weren't real, even for princesses. Especially for princesses. Soulmates didn't exist. She understood that statistically speaking arranged marriages were much less likely to end in divorce than love matches. Because love is fickle. But duty and commitment are eternal. A marriage based on mutual goals, values and priorities was sturdier, at least according to the numbers.
She took several deep breaths to steady herself. Liam would make a good husband. He had been nothing but polite, courteous and accommodating. Distance and somewhat cold, sure. But she was certain she could do much worse. She was lonely, that was her problem. The loneliness had made her read too much into previous night. She had only been here a week, she would make friends eventually, she just needed a little more time. And maybe her father would send Anabelle to her.
Her Aunt was counting on her, her country was counting on her, her family was counting on her. Everyone was counting on her. There was a church, no, a cathedral, full of people waiting on her. She couldn't back out now. It would embarrass her family, it would cause an international incident, it would strain relations with Cordonia. More than strain them. The time to back out, the time to change her mind, had long passed.
She couldn't renege at the last moment, leave the crown Prince of Cordonia at the altar. Her parents would probably disown her, and then where would she go? What would she do? It was fine. Or it would be. It would be fine, she told herself, she would be fine.
“Thanks, Ry.” She told him. “You’re right. I’m okay now.”
“You sure?” He asked her, “Because I could pull a car around and we can make for the border.”
She laughed as she pulled him into a hug, “I’m sure.”
She finished getting ready, looked at herself in the full-length mirror and gathered all her resolve before stepping out of the dressing room.
“Hey kitten!” Her father greeted her when she reached the vestibule.
“Hi Daddy.” She gave him a genuine smile. She could walk down that aisle with him beside her. It was the only way she could.
“You ready for this sweetheart?” He asked.
She looked up into his eyes, wondering what he would say she told him no. If she admitted that she wanted to run out of the church. If she asked him to just take her home. But she knew the answer.
Instead, she screwed up her courage, inhaled a deep breath, pasted a brilliant smile on her face, and nodded her head. She just needed to get through the ceremony and everything would be ok.
As the music started, she snapped into princess mode. Smile in place, head held high, regal walk, feelings completely locked down. She kept her eyes focused straight ahead, trained on Constantine only because he was the thing directly in front of her. It wasn't until she made it to the front of the cathedral and turned to face her groom that she saw him.
Her eyes went to Liam first, his hands clasped in front of him, the same fake diplomatic smile that she wore pasted on his face. He was perfectly handsome. Perfectly polite. Perfectly well spoken. There was really nothing she could object to. Other than the fact that he didn't set her soul on fire. He was as cold as the palace itself. She was grateful for the thickness of the veil as she blinked back her tears.
He was standing behind and slightly to the side of Liam, partially blocked from her view, head down looking at the floor. He was in her peripheral, but all her focus was on getting through the ceremony, so she didn’t really notice him. Not until she’d said I do, and his head snapped up.
It was the movement that drew her attention. She glanced at him, and her blood turned to ice water in her veins. It took every ounce of strength she possessed to keep her body from jerking backwards in shock.
Several emotions shot through her in rapid succession. Stunned disbelief, then a surge of joy followed quickly by a jolt of dismay, horror and shame at the circumstances. The last emotion to hit her heart, as she registered the expression of shock and heartbreak on his face was anguish.
She could still hear what was going on, but it sounded far away, like she was standing at the end of a tunnel.
“Drake? Drake?” Liam prompted him.
At least she knew his name now.
Drake drug his gaze from her to Liam like he was in a trance, “What?”
“The rings man!” Liam grinned at him.
“OH!” Drake produced the rings while the crowd tittered in amusement at the minor snafu.
Liam took her hand in his and slid the ring on her finger. He gave her hand a small squeeze, likely meant to be comforting because he could feel her hand shaking. It wasn’t because of him though.
Through the roar in her ears, she heard Constantine tell her to repeat after him. She repeated his words without really processing them.
While Constantine wrapped up the ceremony, she fought the most epic battle she’d ever fought with herself, to staunch the tide of tears and panic rising in her chest.
“You may kiss the bride.”
Her heart was screaming, No! She died a little inside. Drake was going to stand there and watch Liam kiss her. She frantically, desperately wished she had explained everything to him last night. Made him understand that she had no choice. Now he would think last night meant nothing.
She couldn’t stop the tears that slipped out and ran down her cheeks as Liam lifted the veil. She couldn’t stop her eyes from going to Drake before she slammed them shut. She couldn’t stop the pain stabbing through her heart.
Now that she was face to face with him again, she knew Ryder had been wrong, knew she had been wrong. It wasn’t nerves, stress or anxiety. Her fear hadn’t caused her to imagine things. The connection she felt to him was real. He was her future, the only one she wanted, the one she was destined for. But it was too late. She’d made the most horrible mistake of her life.
( cismale ) haven’t seen AMOS BAROT around in a while. the DEV PATEL lookalike has been known to be (+) INSOUCIANT & (+) KEEN, but HE can also be (-) TROUBLED & (-) DERISIVE. floral suits and a light air of mock-arrogance, charming smiles and a mischievous glint, easy sarcasm and raised eyebrows. rolling joints resembling cigars, smoke drifting towards ceilings as conspiratorial rambles escape intoxicated lips, wild gestures and toppled book stacks, four expresso shots at the stroke of midnight and equations leading off whiteboards. heavy eye bags and warm smiles, dismissive words and excuses. sleepwalking to the middle of the quad for the third time that week, donning white boxers littered with red hearts...again. secret glances and barely contained excitement, distractions from the obvious.

biography
introducing...another one of indira’s cousins !!!!
born to olena barot, member of the american embassy in london/future U.S. ambassador to the UK and ronak barot, CEO of his very own computer company. needless to say, he and his younger sister alya were born into a certain wealth
they hopped between the US and the UK and wherever else they desired to go on vacation to with ease; UK for school and US for breaks, rome or paris or wherever else, simply whenever.
despite this though !! olena and ronak had always wanted their children to find their own success, to be financially stable without their assistance once they got older. therefore, it was a known fact in their household that they’d be cut off financially by the time they were 21.
luckily, neither of them really minded this? both children had always had an extreme thirst for knowledge and a wonder for things. even so--their childhood wasn’t quite typical, as their competitive natures led to them trying to one-up each other?
alya and amos grew up extremely close to each other, being so close in age it really didn’t feel as if she was the younger sibling; they were more like twins than anything. obviously, amos still gloated about being the eldest, but their bond was tight.
there were moments in their childhood where if anybody, and i mean anybody--spoke ill of alya, amos would get into physical alterations. he’s much more peaceful now, but the history is still there.
by the time amos entered sixth form, his studies were--while still very important to him--less frequent. he’d go out nearly every night, gone whole weekends, partying or being a general hooligan.
alya, however, did not partake in these activities. this is where they differed--amos had always been an extrovert, fond of crowds and people and being in the center of it all. causing ruckus. wrecking havoc. alya’s always been...reserved, in the best way possible. few knew just what a gem she was, but she really was to be treasured. even so--the less time amos seemed to spend at home, the more distant alya became towards him.
but, surprise: despite being literally, incredibly smart, amos got BIG DUMBASS ENERGY and was very very oblivious to the why and how of this. which really, really did not help.
unfortunately, there wasn’t any time to dwell about this.
around the same time, tragedy struck the barot family.
after one of his lil’ runabouts, amos came home to find furniture being escorted out of their house, police--his sister crying, his mother ashamed, his father nowhere to be found.
and soon after, amos found out that his father was arrested for a scandal that sent many into a tizzy. essentially: the company fucked over their own customers via stealing their info, committing some fraud, y’know, credit cards and social security numbers, sellin’ it. just. some nasty white collar crime.
it also wound up fucking up olena’s newly acquired position as the US ambassador for the UK. she was released from the embassy during ronak’s trials.
he ultimately wound up in prison, and olena moved their family back to the U.S.
and amos--being the big dumb baby he is, figured the best thing to do was to pretend it hadn’t bothered him one bit! so he did exactly that!
i imagine that they moved close to indira’s family, and amos spent a lot of time with her from there then.
however, in between pretending things were fine and dandy, and home life, and the drag and pull of parties, anxiety weighed down amos’ bones like...constantly. his family was now, essentially, poor with a mass debt thanks to their father. the expectations for amos to do good, to be better--the fall of amos’ biggest role model.
it was all too much. anxiety attacks became frequent, provoked by the slightest thing--he could only lay awake at night, sleep infrequent. he was diagnosed with generalized anxiety disorder and insomnia, and treated for both--some days it still doesn’t feel like enough.
getting a scholarship to lockwood is probably the best thing to happen to him in a long time. it was a new look into a potential future.
got into the uh...career, of sorts, of doing people’s assignments for them for a hefty payment, alongside his normal job. just to make sure he had spending money and whatnot.
involving tatiana: their friendship bloomed after he did a few assignments for her, y’see--then came the midnight adventures, and whatnot. i wouldn’t have called them close by any means, but they had fun together when they weren’t arguing. their friendship ended after a pretty bad car accident--neither were fatally hurt, but the car was wrecked and it was amos’ fault and it just. sorta was the end of that.
he’s got a...reliability on his sleeping pills, if you will. it’s not healthy in the slightest, but he’s convinced it’s nothing serious. it’s pretty serious.
his eyesight is also getting worse--expected to become legally blind by the time he’s forty.
more on those l8r
personality
there’s a lot of words you can use to describe amos! pretentious, sarcastic, provoking, hardly ever serious, immature, petty, Just Like That, full of himself, smartass, big dumbass energy. y’know. just an infinite amount.
he can be so dramatic! everything he does is exaggerated. he rolls cigar-sized joints at every party. goes around with a horrible ‘20s mobster voice, voicing his lil’ conspiracies.
it’s both hard and very easy to forget that amos graduated as valedictorian of his high school (stealing it, from somebody else--i should mention, as he came in halfway thru the year and kinda just. snatched the title.) because he can be a real idiot sometimes.
because he tries to hard to mask his insecurities, he overcompensates with just. being childish. he’s fun to be around but sometimes he can just be. exhausting.
so like, he went into computer engineering because that was just sorta what he always wanted to do? besides programming? he really wanted to take after his father--but with him being in jail and whatnot, kinda puts a damper to that dream. still, he can’t stop.
so he’s just. really good with computers tbh?? built his own, programmed his own firewall. his dream is to open his own cybersecurity company.
VERY STRESSED LIKE CONSTANTLY like catch him in the library with six empty coffee cups surrounding his work, it’s 2am--he hasn’t slept, in fact his eyes are likely taped opened. he works a lot.
but parties...a lot more! he tries rly hard to not mix his medication with anything so that leads to him...not always taking it, or overcompensating when he misses. it’s a mess. he’s a mess. he thinks he knows what he’s doing but he’s NOT.
i think...i’d consider him lovable. he’s a lil eccentric, a lil high energy.
LOVES HIS FAMILY. like, listen. he still loves his dad. would protect his cousins and sister and mother with his mf life.
alya and him aren’t on the...best terms rn. so that Hurts.
he can be really petty tbh ?? like he can’t take arguments seriously so he just becomes this fucking manchild. he will mimic u. he’ll mock u. he can be hurtful.
god...i don’t even know what else to say. just take him TAKE HIM
wanted connections
as always, i am a big slut for every connection.
give him his Lads. his buds. his pals. his broskis. his bromances.
ride or die(s)
people he tutors !! people whose work he does for them !!
somebody who goes to him b/c of computer troubles n he’s just like...r u going to pay me or nah
high school friends??
party pals??
his sister may become a WC in the future but idk quite yet, we do stan her though !!
drug dealer pls n thank
ex friends ?? fake friends ?? toxic friends ??
bad influences ?? good influences ??
hook ups ?? like a lot of ‘em ??
