Even from the staff dining room table, Severus Snape could sense a difference in the way you talked to your friends, your posture, the way your bottom lip pouted. It wasn’t like him to get invested in his students but you, Y/N L/N, were an actual good student - you were a top student in his class, wasn’t too overbearing like Hermione Granger, and kept to yourself.
However, he could notice the change a mile away.
Trying to focus in on other students’ conversations, he couldn’t help but overhear your name from the Gryffindor table. He noticed right away that the voice who spoke your name belonged to Sebastian Visco, your boyfriend. But why was his arm around another girl?
Snape wouldn’t admit but he honestly thought you and Sebastian were what students would call a ‘power couple.’ Were you the better half? Yes, of course, but it seemed as if Sebastian truly made you feel special - your smiles were genuine.
But from your gloomy face, downcast eyes, and uneaten meal, he assumed the relationship wasn’t as perfect as it seemed.
That night, it was pure luck that he was again on patrol for students who were feeling rebellious after curfew. Strolling the halls, Snape’s shoes barely echoed off the stone before he started hearing another pair of footsteps - and sniffles. They weren’t trying to be quiet.
Snape dragged himself to the courtyard where he quickly remembered playing Gobstones with Lily back in the day. Shaking his head, he turned to the figure who was hunched over one of the stone benches with their head in their hands. Their hands then left their face to play with the rings on their left/right hand.
It was odd how he knew it was you - like he grew up with you and knew your hair, your quirks when you were upset.
Snape slowly and quietly approached you, “Ms./Mr. L/N?”
Your body tensed as you stood up to face your professor, “Professor Snape! I- I, my dearest apologies, sir; I just needed some fresh air.”
Your professor nodded, “I know I’m not usually the caring type, L/N,” he gestured you to sit back down on the stone bench, “but what has got you so distracted and on the verge of tears every second of every day?”
You played with your rings as your professor loomed over you before deciding to sit beside you, a good foot apart, “Sebastian and I broke up, actually. . .”
Before Snape had time to respond, either saying he cared or telling you to get over it, you continued, “and I know it’s stupid to cry over a breakup, I really do! But he made me feel special, he really did, and then he dumped me out of nowhere, saying he found someone else. . .”
Snape thought back to the girl Sebastian had his arm around and he rolled his eyes, “and Pansy Parkinson of all people.”
Silence enveloped the two of you before you snorted, a big laugh leaving your system as you hunched over slightly, your pointer finger curled between your lips to try and silence your laugh. Snape chuckled along with you as you wiped tears from your eyes.
After calming down from your laughing fit, you turned to your professor, “are boys always going to break my heart, sir?”
Snape shook his head, “not always, my dear. But there will be more in the future until you find the one - they’ll know how many times your heart has been to battles, but they’d fight a war to make sure you’d never be hurt again.”
You felt chills go up your spine from your professor’s comment, “really, professor?”
Severus gave a genuine smile, one he hadn’t given in a long, long time, “really.”
You smiled at Snape, scooching closer and resting your head on his shoulder, “thank you, sir.” No response was needed.
After a few moments, Snape decided it’d be best to head back inside and walk you to your dorm. Along the way, Snape decided he’d personally give Sebastian more undesired attention in class and assignments just for his darling pupil.
Or, in his own words, “are you going to make his life a living hell, regretting he ever broke up with you, or shall I?”
Now, a few days later, from the dining room table, Snape could once again see the smile on your face, your fixed appearance, and the overall beautiful energy you were once again giving off.
One thing he would never admit to you, though, is the fact that if Sebastian ever stepped a foot closer to you again, he’d have no choice but to turn into the big brother you never had and always wanted.
