She Wore White

Who knew a blue-eyed girl had the ability to change the attitude of pouty, little Zuko at a wedding.

Zuko clawed at his collar, pulling the bow that tightened around his neck. The smell of flowers and perfume made him gag. The women in the room were shrieking and giving compliments to the bride-to-be. His mother had dragged him to the wedding to be the ring bearer and five year old Zuko was moody.

His mother bought him a fitted black suit with a red collared shirt and black bow. His dress pants stopped above his knees and he wore calve length red stockings. He couldn’t possibly look more ridiculous .

When they arrived to prepare for the ceremony, the women pinched and kissed his cheeks aggressively, causing the poor boy to pout in the corner to get as far away from them as he could.

Women were crazy!

The women and his mother, who grabbed his small hand, rushed out to where the ceremony would be held.

The clear blue skies made the white décor glow vibrantly. Zuko could never understand why weddings were always white. Unfortunately Ursa was social and always participated in her friends’ weddings. This time, she decided to add him to the mix.

Placing him at the end of the aisle in front of the bride and her father, Zuko watched his mother take her place and left him holding a white silk pillow with two gold rings placed on it. Zuko gulped and stood up straight, doing the best he could to look poised and responsible.

“Make sure you don’t drop that.” A sweet voice said next to him.

Zuko’s eyes widened when he caught a glance at the girl next to him swinging a white basket of flower petals. Her skin was a smooth brown and her chocolate hair was put in an elegant bun, a crown of flowers on her head. She was twirling around, her white buckled dress shoes giving her the traction she needed to keep from slipping. If she almost fell over, she would giggle, much to Zuko’s dislike.

“Hey stop it.” he snapped. “You can’t act like that.”

She stopped abruptly,”Whooaaa.” she giggled some more as her dizzy vision settled. “And why not?”

Zuko huffed. It wasn’t proper so he decided to just ignore her.

Which turned out harder than he thought when she spun around as they headed down the aisle tossing clumps of petals from her small, chubby hands, some landing on his head. Zuko growled at how she was misbehaving.

“Oh lighten up.” She laughed at his reaction. “You look like a sour platypus-bear.”

How dare she! “I do not!”

“Hehe, yes you do, like this…” she crossed her shiny blue eyes, puffing her cheeks and sticking her lips out.

Zuko almost laughed but gulped it down. “You're weird.” he mumbled.

“No, I’m Katara.” she stuck her tongue out at him. “What’s yours?”

He wasn’t sure if it was appropriate to talk during the ceremony. “Z-Zuko.”

“Zuko.” she repeated with a smile. “Well, I like ya, Zuko!”

With that she leaned towards him and gave him a wet, sloppy kiss on the cheek. Zuko jerked back in surprise, watching her walk to the bride’s side of the outdoor alter. He blushed furiously as the ordained minister spoke. Every time he snuck a glance at her, she was looking back at him with a big smile.

Maybe this wedding wasn’t going to be so annoying after all.
