On June 22, 1969, a spark from a passing rail car ignited an oil slick on the surface of Ohio's Cuyahoga River, causing a fire the city of Cleveland had similarly witnessed at least a dozen times before along the heavily polluted river. Public outrage led to clean-up efforts that soon birthed the Clean Water Act, the Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement, and the Environmental Protection Agency, transformational gifts the people of Ohio gave to the country in hopes of being forgiven for also giving us Marilyn Manson.
