There is always something new in Israel, whether a groundbreaking medical discovery or a new venture that is likely to take the business world by storm. This week's newsletter has even more new beginnings; a new village for IDF prep school graduates, an Israeli mother begins studying medicine at the same university as her daughter; an Israeli Druze doctor who met new relatives from Syria in his hospital; a new Israeli food startup inspired by a diabetic daughter; new, "green", building material; a new multi-million dollar fund for Israeli startups; and Israel are the new European champions at men's lacrosse.
There are constant historical reminders of the roots of the modern Jewish State. Archaeologists recently discovered a Canaanite blade workshop, and 2,000-year-old jewelry. More relevant, a rare 69CE Jewish "redemption" coin has just been unearthed. Imagine what those Jews would say if they could see the place now!
Finally, in an Israeli hospital another "miracle" Israeli baby was born; and in another, a Filipino ex-hostage called his new baby daughter "Israela". No connection, but birdwatchers were astonished to record a rare mocha-colored stork fly in to Israel's Hulda reservoir!
The iconic photo is of Theodor Herzl in Basel where he said he "founded the Jewish State". The title of his 1902 book "Altneuland" translates as "Old New Land". In 2025, Israel more resembles a New Old Land.
