Code is all done!

Earlier this week, we hit a milestone. We have finished all the code for our game "Stars"! So now we are working on the final design of all of the art work. So far we have completed the art for the default star and its tail. Plus the platforms and coin. Basically only the things we have to finish is the art work of all the different stars. We want to have around 20 stats available at launch, and we can add more through updates. This game is ahead of schedule, we might even have this game out by the end of May! Lots and lots of code!

Even though our game has simple gameplay, we have several hundreds lines of code written. Most of it is setting up the UI and game images; because our game is so simple, it would be easier to not use the scene builder in SpriteKit and to hard code everything. The result of this is one file of endless code. This is not good because it is more likely to have bugs and we keep on getting lost in our code. So we have a solution: use different scenes We are going to have 5 different scenes: the start scene, the game scene, the game over scene, and the store and choose star scenes. We will still hard code all our sprites because there is still not a lot of them. This way we will minimize the amount of code in one file, and be able to solve bugs quicker. But there is just one problem. At the start scene a particle emitter starts emitting the effect of stars passing by. We need to figure out away to keep this same particle emitter emitting across all scenes, no matter which one the player is currently in. So far we have not found a solution to this, but we are working hard to solve this problem.

Finalizing Some Game Art!

This game is way ahead of schedule. Originally we were planning on spending the whole month of April coding and the whole month of May on game art. But it turns out that our game is already 95% done coding and we are now making the final game art.

So far what we have finalized is the title image on the start screen, and one of the moving platforms that the player will be jumping on. Right now we are currently working on a coin. The coin will be sitting on top of the moving platforms that the player can collect to buy more game characters. But for some reason we can't get our design just right. Our game takes place in space and the player controls a shooting star; all of our designs don't really fit into the theme of the game. Once we get a final coin design we will post it for all you guys to see! Stay tune!
