Dear Mind Merger,

I think you may have already seen the end of the story of Autobot X, in the pages of Generations Selects. In order to humiliate and defeat the Quintessons, an aged and dying Spike Witwicky transferred his mind into a new body composed of multiple Neo Autobot City components: Neo Autobot X. But I suppose you wouldn’t know the chain of events that lead to this rebirth. I shall tell them to you now.

Sparkplug Witwicky had never feared death. While obviously an untimely death was something to be avoided, he was a practical man, and accepted that human beings got only one chance at living. Even as he and his son became embroiled in the Great War, he put his faith in the Autobots, many of whom he considered kindred spirits, like-minded tool and die men like Ratchet and Wheeljack. On one occasion, even knowing the associated risks, he trusted the Autobots with the very life of his son, Spike’s mind being transferred into the failed Autobot X prototype. After that terrifying episode ended, the prototype was stored away, and life went on.

Sparkplug grew old, and watched with pride as his son grew as well. The Autobots came to Spike and Carly’s wedding, Bumblebee bringing along the Peruvian villager Luisa and her brother’s convertible as his date. They came to the birth of Sparkplug’s grandson, Bumblebee in awe as a tiny hand pawed at his smallest finger.

Would they be there at Spike’s funeral as well?

The thought made Sparkplug shiver. Was his son’s time with his closest friends destined to be a mere blink in the eye for the Autobots? Why should Bumblebee be left behind as Spike moves on?

Thoughts raced in Sparkplug’s mind. The Autobots and the EDC had used data from the original mind transfer experiment on a number of projects over the decades. Binaltech, the Eldedroids, even the Kiss Players… Autobot X’s DNA lay in all of them. There had been other advances too, old technology rediscovered as heroic young men and women used the power of the Masterforce to transform, culminating in a borderline miraculous copy-pasting of personalities when their transtectors became true Transformer life-forms.

Using his connections and seniority among the Autobot’s human allies, Sparkplug began what became known as Project Neo: the development of inert Transformer bodies to be used as full-body prosthetics in the event of catastrophic harm or death. Unfortunately, Sparkplug wouldn’t live to see its completion, dying in 2040 shortly after the founding of the new Cybertron Alliance.

Only when humanity began its stellar adolescence as the age of Angolmois and the Selectors arose did the project bear fruit. Using the full processing power of the Mother Computer at Neo Autobot City allowed for a safe and secure mind transfer. Sparkplug had informed Spike of the project near his death, and to his credit never forced the idea upon him. In truth, I see the value in such a technology if used for good and the protection of life, and like any parent Sparkplug wanted to give his child every possible option. That said, only under the threat of death did Spike undergo the transfer. Perhaps as he grew older and reliant on the slavery of the Selectors did he begin to feel some disconnect from the Cybertronians around him… For shame.

As humanity and the Selectors spread out among the stars following the abandonment of Earth, the common adoption of Neo Autobot X technology was but the first step in the multitude of evolutionary branches that would bloom from the humans. If nothing else, it brought the humans and their Selector partners closer together.

I cannot help but see my brothers and sisters in this story. Such great change, all stemming from the love of a father for his son. As humans become Transformers and vice versa, I believe we find the truest glimpse of Primus’ dream.

Who is he ? (from G1 cartoon “The Autobot Run”)

Ah, that would be Steelburn! I believe he was an older-generation Autobot, dating from the same era as Kup; a lieutenant in the Autobot forces on Cybertron, Steelburn was rare amongst his faction for his flying alternate mode, which he used for reconnaissance and aerial defense—though owing to a case of metal fatigue in his transformation cog, he frequently found himself succumbing to mode lock, forcing him to remain on foot. While he was an effective leader and warrior, Steelburn was not particularly well-liked, owing to his ego and tendency to nitpick others' accomplishments; the only one of his fellows that he was close to was the ornery Bulldog, another older Transformer, who transformed into a Cybertronian tank.

In the latter days of the Cybertronian energy crisis, Steelburn was charged by Optimus Prime with procuring resources for Project: Vanguard, intended to construct a vast spaceship with which the Autobots could escape from their dying homeworld. While he took to this role well—albeit with no small amount of grumbling—it would prove to be his final assignment, thanks to one fateful mission. While raiding a Decepticon warehouse for a potent force-chip, an essential component of any thruster as large as those needed for the Project: Vanguard craft, Bulldog was fatally wounded by a falling cargo-hauling arm. Unwilling to leave his friend to die alone, Steelburn bravely stayed by his side, holding off the Decepticon defense forces so that Ironhide and Chromia could escape with the chip; though he did not survive his heroic stand, Optimus Prime personally honored him with a data-memorial in the files of Teletraan I.

While this story ends tragically, I am happy to tell you that not every such version of Steelburn and Bulldog suffered such a fate; in one reality, the duo managed to survive to the era of the Cybertron Alliance and joined their old commander on Earth. Influenced by the archaic Smith & Wesson alternate mode of Kiloton, a Decepticon that they befriended, Steelburn would take on a Supermarine Spitfire form, while Bulldog scanned a Mark IV tank.

Dear Vector Prime, can you tell me about Esmeral, Deathsaurus's wife? What's her history?

Dear Spousal Scientist,

Some say that behind every great mech is a great conjunx, and Esmeral certainly embodies that maxim. A graduate of the Darkmount Military Academy, Esmeral met Deathsaurus during the conquest of Probat, and they have made a formidable pair ever since. 

Though certainly skilled in combat, Esmeral's true power was her mastery of espionage, diplomacy and strategy. Many an Autobot peace envoy would make their way to an alien world, only to find its government already suspicious of Autobots and on the take of the Decepticons, all by her hand. She plotted courses through eldritch regions of space, hiding Decepticon factories in gravity pockets and minefields, far from the eyes of scouts. At the height of her tenure as Empress of Destruction, she was known as the "Jewel in the Fortress' Heart" by the rank and file. 

Indeed, her cunning was matched only by, incredibly, her genuine love for her fellow Decepticon and her husband Deathsaurus. Her kindness gave him the strength he needed to match Star Saber, and perhaps rubbed off on him, given his adoption of the human Solon Kitakaze, upon whom she dotes to this day. Even I must commend this trait; in the present day, she has become a sterling councillor of the Cybertron Alliance, quick to offer reparations and among the first to notice the plight of the Selectors.

Vector Prime, what happens to a transformer's spark when they become immersant with Cybertron? Do they die and rejoin the Allspark, or something else? And do Cybertronians in other realities also go immersant?

Dear Immersant Initiate,

There are a few universes in which a Cybertronian might undergo this peculiar kind of ego-death: the reality where Thunderstar and Skyquake became rulers of the Cybertron Alliance is one such continuum. In another, the Builders of Cybertron chose to hardwire their bodies into the infrastructure of their homeworld, a living death that quite often segued into final deactivation.

The process of immersion is a gradual one, a slow dissolution of the individual self as their physical body rejoins the living fabric of Cybertron. On the metaphysical plane, it is indeed a gradual trek back towards the Allspark; immersants slowly become less coherent and detached from the affairs of the physical world as their Sparks drift closer and closer to their final destination. Conventional Cybertronian wisdom holds the process to be almost irreversible—but a sufficiently motivated Cybertronian can find the strength to return to the waking world, however briefly. Dear, vector prime, two questions: 1. In the uniend cluster, megatron was often seen with a Cybertronian tank and jet alt mode, was he a triple changer? 2. What happened to him during his exile from cybertron?

Dear Exile Excavator,

The Megatron you speak of did indeed favour a tank alternate mode during the war for Cybertron, an adaptation of his original mining vehicle form. However, once the war took to the stars, he eventually began to favour the advantages conferred by flight, originally using a back-mounted rocket pack before undergoing a full rebuild into a Decepticon starfighter form. Along with being able to bombard his hated foe Optimus Prime from afar, this form was capable of long-distance space flight under his own power through the use of Dark Energon. 

As for his ultimate fate, I’m afraid it is not an exciting tale. Megatron exiled himself to the long-abandoned fortress world of Chaar, cutting himself off entirely from the outside world. His spirit utterly broken by the realisation that he had become the domineering tyrant he had once fought against, he spent the rest of his days wiping all traces of Decepticon habitation from the planet. It is my understanding that a number of his former lieutenants made failed attempts to summon him back on to the Cybertronian stage; I believe if they’d succeeded he would have quietly ignored the message. 

Perhaps this comes as a disappointment to you. Other Megatrons have made much more active attempts to repent for their actions. The one who captained the Lost Light eventually realised the unforgivable nature of his crimes and submitted to the Galactic Council’s justice. The Megatron of the OG World became a committed leader of the Cybertron Alliance and was indeed a hero of the downtrodden right up to his tragic end. But with his ideology destroyed and Optimus sequestered in the Realm of the Primes, he had nothing left. All I can say for sure is that, from what I can see of that universe’s far future, Chaangri-laar as it is known then is considered a paradise world for beast-formers.

Dear Vector Prime, are there any cases where thirteen extraordinary beings formed their own team to oppose the Thirteen Great Demon Generals?

Dear Triskadecimal Teller,

With such a great union of foul intent as was found in the Thirteen Great Demon Generals, perhaps it was inevitable that an order of heroes would be assembled to combat them, drawn from across worlds and time by the mysterious power of the Zodiac. First among them was Brightes, the noble warrior-leader from the distant past; mighty Matrix Sword in hand, he became the Vanguard Ancestor Prime. Next came Thunderstar of the Cybertron Alliance; though his sadness at having to leave Skyquake's side was vast, he nonetheless stepped forward to become the Vector Oracle Prime.

From out among the stars came the scholar Fortress Tiberius, the Deep Space Voyager Prime. Wielding enough power to reforge stars, Victorion was the Brave Origin Prime. Shreddicus Maximus, known for radical actions under extreme circumstances, was selected as the Red Gnar Prime. The mystic scientist Ectotron brought his knowledge to bear as the Fearless Exorcist Prime.

Others joined them. Volcompumaster, the warm and all-knowing union of three generations of heroes, was the Techno Lineage Prime. On the eve of a great Fight Night, Volcanicus was called to become the Battle Master Prime. Nightbird was the Sixfold Shinobi Prime, while Sari Sumdac became the Cosmic Unity Prime; two Earth-born heroes, but from vastly different origins. Prowl, cunning and manipulative, was the Construction Overlord Prime, and the pragmatic and individualistic Termagax was the Demon General Prime.

Despite such a great assembly of heroes and warriors, they would still be vastly outmatched by their opposing numbers were it not for their final member; drawn from the far future just as Brightes hailed from the past, Astral Knight was the Infinite Recursion Prime, who carried within his proto-cells the power of stories and legends that never were and yet might be. Together, these Great Thirteen Primes would do battle with their opposite numbers across infinity, protecting worlds from the power of the Bio-Ranger Iga. The final outcome of their war might be cloaked from my sight, but I have faith that the forces of good will triumph.

Dear Vector Prime, Did Thunder Clash ever become Supreme Commander of the Autobots like Dai Atlas, Star Saber, Ginrai, Fortress Maximus and Rodimus Convoy before him?

Dear Stormin' Norman,

Thunderclash, Thunderclash... Ah, yes! I believe you're talking about Thundercrush, who succeeded Star Convoy. After the defeat of Dark Nova, the creature's remains imploded into the Nova Hole, a gateway to a far-off dimension, from which emerged Skyquake and his Hunters. Long lost in space and time, Skyquake believed that the Autobots would one day be led by the megalomaniacal Hyper Drive Convoy, and hoped to destroy the Autobots to preserve the Decepticons' way of life. Alas, Star Convoy had already partially merged with planet Cybertron as part of a plan to rejuvenate it using the Zodiac energy within his body, and Rodimus had stepped down as supreme commander to serve as his guardian. 

Thundercrush was chosen as new supreme commander to face this threat; having spent much of the war leading the Galactic Edge Patrol, defending the Autobots from extragalactic foes, he was known for his expertise in dealing with bizarre enemies. He was assisted by the Turbo Masters, whose powerful weaponry was functional in both modes. Other Autobot warriors joined the fray; particularly, though Skyquake robbed the Brainmasters of their ability to combine, this only left them more motivated. 

Eventually, Skyquake revealed his endgame: the Gravity Halo, a device that would push the Nova Hole into Cybertron before moving on to the other Autobot base worlds. The planet Feminia had already been destroyed in the machine’s first test-run. Desperate, Thundercrush petitioned Star Convoy for help. Unwilling to end the restoration process, Star Convoy instead exposed Thundercrush to the full force of his Zodiac-irradiated spark, transforming him into Thunderstar, the Herald of the Future. 

Thunderstar led the Autobots into a final attack on the Gravity Halo, confronting Skyquake himself in a grueling fistfight in the centre of the Nova Hole while his soldiers split up to attack the weapon itself from multiple angles. As the Autobots successfully dealt with each defense mechanism, Skyquake became more and more distraught. He eventually collapsed in a heap, convinced that he had failed to prevent the future he had foreseen from coming to pass. That was when Thunderstar reminded him that hope is the right of all sentient beings, and healed his wounds with an emergency fuel transfer. In the face of this unconditional forgiveness, Skyquake willingly shut down the Gravity Halo, and the pair embraced.

Sensing this victory, Star Convoy bid farewell to his old friend Rodimus, and became fully immersant, restoring Cybertron once more. Skyquake and Thunderstar became joint rulers of the Cybertron Alliance, bringing an end to the war. The rank of Supreme Commander was thrown aside, having become symbolic of the once-unending war. Hyper Drive Convoy never did manifest in this universe, and I seem to remember this particular Cybertron Alliance lasting far longer than most—a testament to the power of clemency.
