Rest in Peace, John Bain, a Role-model to many.
John Bain, or Totalbiscuit, or Cynical Brit, passed away after a 3 year struggle with cancer. He was a divisive figure in the gaming community, for his very blunt and straightforward stance on many issues. Unwavering, he stood up for what he felt was right for the gaming industry. Many people disagreed with his stances, but most respected his unquestionable dignity and resolve.
He was a key figure in the gaming industry, as well as various content creation platforms such as youtube and twitch. In the early years of WoW, John was fairly influential and well known among the community, and from that, his presence grew further. When he grew to a relatively popular state, he used his industry presence to bring attention to great games and developers that needed a little help. John single-handedly saved many indie games, and some would even say he saved the now massive game Warframe with his early publicity. In a similar way, John helped kickstart many content creators and boost them out of obscurity, starting careers and indirectly creating communities. Other content creators, such as Hearthstone streamer, Trump, noted the large impact and influence John had on their careers, many stating that he was an inspiration that kept them going and reaching for their goals. John did none of this in an effort to look good. John wanted to see quality content in the communities he was part of flourish, and due to his presence, it has.
Generally, I wouldn’t make posts in remembrance for passed celebrities, but John was important to me. I grew up on his content, and his stances on ethics and consumer advocacy in the gaming industry were the foundation for my own. Many of my feelings and opinions on various topics in gaming originate from him. As I grew up with him, he became an influential role model for me. His content got me into gaming more than on a casual level, and he lead me to PC gaming. He introduced me to so many content creators that I watch as well. I hope and aspire to one day become a man much like John was. Someone who stands by his beliefs for what is right, and commands respect among even those who disagree with him. John was an inspiration, and I very well may never forget him. I wish I could have met him, and though I never had the chance, I cannot describe how profoundly sad I am now that he has passed. His influence will never leave me. Rest in peace, John Bain. My condolences go out to his friends and family.
