The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring by Peter Jackson (2001)
"‘And who are you, and what have you to do with Minas Tirith?’ asked Boromir, looking in wonder at the lean face of the Ranger and his weather-stained cloak. ‘He is Aragorn son of Arathorn,’ said Elrond ‘and he is descended through many fathers from Isildur Elendil’s son of Minas Ithil. He is the Chief of the Dúnedain in the North, and few are now left of that folk.’" - J.R.R. Tolkien, The Fellowship of the Ring, "The Council of Elrond"
@tolkienofcolourweek day 2: ancestry, heritage, passing on traditions ⇢ ARAGORN'S LINE
[ID: an edit comprised of six posters in various shades of brown and tan, with some pale blue or grey accents.
1: A small oval image at the top left shows Cherokee Jack, an aniyunwiya man with long, straight black hair and brown skin. He is shown in profile, looking off to the right and wearing several layers of clothing. Large outlined text below the image reads "Elros" and underneath in a serif and cursive font, "First king of Númenor." Below that is a block quote in much smaller text reading "At the feet of the mountain were built the tombs of the Kings, and hard by upon a hill was Armenelos, fairest of cities, and there stood the tower and the citadel that was raised by Elros son of Eärendil, whom the Valar appointed to be the first king of the Dúnedain." The part of the block is a lighter color, and italicized. At the bottom of the image, serif text reads "Tar-Minyatur" in all caps, and around the side of the oval text reads "star-foam." Large dark brown text along the right side of the poster reads "founder" in all caps / 2: A building with many towers and domes. Brown and cream-colored outlined text in the center reads "kings" repeated over and over / 3: Same format as Image 2, but the image shows a rocky ocean shore. Text reads "heroes" / 4: Same format as Image 1, but the orientation is reversed. The oval shows Ekow Otoo, a ghanaian-british model with brown skin and long dark hair in twists. He looks toward the viewer with a serious, calm expression. Text below the image reads "Elendil" and "Leader of the Faithful." Curving text along the side reads "star lover." The text block reads "Amandil and Elendil were great ship-captains; and they were of the line of Elros Tar-Minyatur, though not of the ruling house to which belonged the crown and the throne in the city of Armenelos.” The first two phrases are emphasized. Bottom and side text read "Nimruzîr" and "voyager" both in all caps / 5: Same format as Image 1. The oval shows Najib Abdi, a somalian model with brown skin and curly brown hair. He looks towards the viewer with a serious, neutral expression. Text below the image reads "Aragorn" and "King of the Westlands." Curved text reads "revered king." Text block reads "Tall as the sea-kings of old, he stood above all that were near; ancient of days he seemed and yet in the flower of manhood; and wisdom sat upon his brow, and strength and healing were in his hands, and a light was about him." The final phrase is emphasized. Bottom and side text reads "Elessar" and "renewer" in all caps / 6: Same format as Images 2 and 3. The background shows a carved stone dome seen over other stone walls. Text reads "builders anew" /End ID]
The weirdness of the Dúnedain is definitely downplayed in the fandom, but I really don’t think people get how strange Gondorian Dúnedain must seem to the Rohirrim.
There’s a spooky mountain on their border full of ghosts that are trapped there because a Gondorian king cursed them. In the war of the ring the Gondorians talk of their head of state being prematurely aged because his hair began to grey in his 60s. They put this down to him mind wrestling an evil demigod, and they’re right! Some of them can actually read minds, others can command horses with only thought. They’re very tall and have bright eyes that are sometimes described as glowing.
This is very weird! Their main ally is ruled by giants who age weirdly and look like elves with strange powers from a drowned continent.
@tolkienocweek Day 1: Family Members of Canon Characters
So, I am relatively new to the Tolkien fandom (fully blaming @astriiformes & @scribefindegil's wedding for this) but I have dived in hard and the fanfiction bug has bitten...
This is Tindîliel, she is a Dúnedain Ranger who is descended from Tindómiel (Elros' only daughter), but she does not know that yet. She is badly injured by an orc ambush and carried back to Rivendell for healing. Her story will be about fighting through recovery, and eventually finding a place for herself in Rivendell since she is no longer able to be a Ranger due to her catastrophic injuries.
Drawing is not one of my artistic abilities, so I am making use of several picrews this week.
I have about 8K words written of this fic so far, and I will hopefully be posting the first chapter for the Freeform prompt at the end of the week. Here is a fic snippet until then!
Elrond sat by her bed the next day and pondered the young woman laying before him. By all logic she should not have survived. Even for one of the Dúnedain, these injuries should have killed one of the Second Born. She should have bled out, or died in surgery, but she hung on. He watched the slow rise and fall of her chest, sensing that she would soon wake. Her spirit was strong, her mind seemed intact, but her body was so catastrophically damaged ... The girl stirred, and he leaned closer. She opened her eyes. Grey eyes. His eyes. Elros' eyes. Of course. He could feel it now in her Mannish fëa, she was a distant niece, likely descended from a sibling who did not inherit the throne of Númenor. The small amount of his twin's blood that ran through her veins would explain how she had survived that blood spilling out as she lay broken in the mud for hours before the other Rangers found her. Imladris was once again refuge for the line of Elros, as it always would be. He reached out to take her hand, her one unbroken limb, but stopped. She did not know him, she may not even know of their relation. There would be time to determine that. She would be here for a very long time while she recovered. The rush of affection he felt for her as long lost kin would be satisfied later. For an Elf these injuries taking a few decades to heal would pass in the blink of an eye. For a Man, even a Dúnedain, even a descendant of his twin, this recovery would take a significant portion of her lifetime. From what his twins had told him, she was still young. She had not yet reached her third decade of life. Unless he was wrong about her heritage, she would likely age slowly, and her lifespan would far exceed what was expected for Men, slightly more than the other Dúnedain. But even with that this would significantly alter the course of her life. She did not have hundreds of years for her body to fully reshape bone and dissolve scar tissue. She would likely walk again with time, but her days as a Ranger were undoubtedly over. He resolved that he would find something fulfilling for her here in Rivendell, if she wanted to stay. He certainly wanted her to stay, to hold one of the remaining pieces of his family close for the short time that she spent in Middle Earth.
So according to this one video, the Dúnedain are essentially cryptids in Bree and the northern part of Middle Earth
