I am a new DM for a group of new players. As background, we are at the end of the Starter Kit and the party is in Wave Echo Cave at the moment. Before this, they visited Cragmaw Castle (which was the entirety of last session).
At Cragmaw Castle, the druid came across moldy bread that the goblins had as a part of their meal. He wanted to do a medicine check and determine if he could use the mold to try and make a type of penicillin...
From his check (I think he rolled 13) I simply told him that it was moldy bread which he already knew. I didn't feel that the party would know anything about penicillin or mold in that matter, other than it being spoiled food.
Now he is bitter about not getting anything out of his medicine check that he could have used in assisting the party.
I included some moldy bread in Wave Echo Cave for the current session which he has picked up for further inspection later on (I advised if he wanted to pursue it he needed to save it for later unless he wanted to take hours of the party's time working with this mold).
Does moldy bread, or any spoiled food for that matter, have anything about it that the party can use? The Druid player has been really bitter and making comments about his medicine check from before...
Since I'm a new DM, I am learning as we go and changing how things are handled with what they do along the way. Yeah this means they get "nerfed" a lot but that is just how it is until we can get it right (ex: I recently discovered that sorcerors could not wear armor, so I advised the sorceror this and his AC went down once it was off).
What can I do about this moldy bread situation? I don't want to disappoint the player too much if nothing comes out of it. It seems so silly, but his reaction to the situation has really stressed me out. Any help offered is greatly appreciated.
