Cleric -  Are you religious? So I saved this ask for the end in order to focus on my faith.  Also, this makes it real easy to skip / scroll through if you don’t care so much.  Because when I first thought about the question, I thought to myself, “Well I’m not religious.  I don’t tightly to any particular traditional forms or rituals.”  But then I realized that somebody who is actually not religious would consider me pretty religious.  

I am a Christian, and have at various times served in different staff/leadership positions as worship leader and youth pastor.  I’m a Christian not by birth but by choice, and because it most accurately explains what I observe to be true about the world and about people.  It is a source of comfort, as well as a source of conviction, showing me my responsibilities to the Christ who loves me, and to the world that He wants to love Him.  I’m not sure anyone should really be surprised that a blog called “Lawful Goodness” is run by a Christian.  It probably isn’t a coincidence that so many paladins and Christians are both stereotyped as up-tight sticks-in-the-mud.

D&D asks: Human Wizard (If I did this one already, feel free to ignore this one.)

Nope!  This is the only one I have in my inbox from you.  Although these two together make me realize that I should probably not reblog ask prompts that can’t be answered without sounding like an arrogant asshat.  

D&D Themed Asks

Human - What about you is the most unique or different?I’m not sure how legitimate it is to quote my best friend for validation, but the way he put it is, “I’ve never met somebody who simultaneously wants to understand other people’s opinions, but that also has strong convictions that they understand and can express.“  Apparently, one of the dating websites he was on had a question about “describe your best friend,” and that’s what he said about me.  He said he feels like most people are either really stubborn and strict and judgmental of people they disagree with, or they are sort of indecisive and vague (the end of the spectrum he’s on).  He said he really respects how I value individual people and care about their opinions, even when they strongly differ from my own, and that I can do it without compromising my beliefs.

Wizard - Do you consider yourself to be smart? Usually when people ask me this question, I tell them I’m just over-educated, but that I do like math.  That’s usually enough for them to think I’m some kind of mensa or something.  I’ve never had my IQ tested, and not sure I want to.  But I do value “emotional intelligence” and think understanding people is far more important than understanding numerical linear algebra.

D&D Themed Ask Prompt

Monk - What is something you have improved upon in the past?

You know that kid in class that’s always raising their hand and answering the teacher’s questions and constantly going on and on about what they know to try and impress somebody?  

Yeah, that was me.  Something I’ve really worked hard over the last few years is knowing how and when to keep my mouth shut.  Especially in group conversations, it’s so important to give people time that need to think things through & sort them out before they speak.  My wife is like that.  While I’m the kind of person that has to talk about something to really understand it (auditory thinker), my wife is the type who needs some time and space to think it through.  I’ve had to learn to not only listen, but also to wait.

Rogue - Are you a good liar?

Isn’t that what being a GM is all about? 

Half-Orc - Are you a popular person?

I don’t know… once you’re an adult there isn’t really a dynamic of being “popular.”  You know who your friends are, you surround yourself with them, and it doesn’t really matter much what everyone else is doing.  I am an extrovert and I like being around people, but I’m way too much of a dork to really be considered “popular.”

Chaotic - Are you a whimsical person?

Sometimes I refer to myself as my wife’s “Manic Pixie Dreamboat.”  One of the reasons why I worry that I’m being too much of a grump on tumblr is because in real life I’m pretty silly / goofy.  I worry that Tumblr brings out the curmudgeon in me.

These are some personal questions, man. Dwarf! Paladin!

Yeah, but usually nobody responds to my ask prompts, so I thought I’d take a leap.  Looks like it worked, though.  I got several responses to this D&D-themed Ask Prompt

Dwarf - Are you prideful? I feel like only a proud person would say “no.”  And you have to be at least a little arrogant to be a GM.  It is a job built for megalomaniacs, but I try to at least be somewhat self-aware and conscious of the fact that other people’s feelings, goals, & perspectives are just as important as mine are.

Paladin - What’s the nicest thing you’ve ever done for someone? Okay, now, this is really weird coming right after the “are you prideful?” question.  I feel like any response to this is going to sound like I’m patting myself on the back.  So this is kind of awkward, but I think I would say that my wife and I are the sponsors of an all-deaf soccer team.  A group of deaf players loved soccer, but weren’t allowed on any of their local teams.  There was enough of them that they formed their own team, but they didn’t have the money for uniforms or the equipment required by the league, so my wife & I donated the money to get them the equipment they needed to play in the local league.  It didn’t really cost that much money, but you can tell from their faces when they play how much it means to them.
