On This Day In Royal History - 11 June 1509 . King Henry VIII married Katharine of Aragon
Part 2/2: On 28 May 1533, he pronounced the King legally married to Anne Boleyn (with whom Henry had already secretly exchanged wedding vows). This led to England breaking from the Roman Catholic Church & the establishment of the Church of England.
Katharine refused to accept Henry as supreme head of the Church in England & considered herself the king’s rightful wife & queen, attracting much popular sympathy. Despite this, she was acknowledged only as dowager princess of Wales by Henry. After being banished from court by Henry, she lived out the remainder of her life at Kimbolton Castle, & died there on 7 January 1536 of cancer. The English people held Katharine in high esteem, & her death set off tremendous mourning. . Katharine’s pregnancies & children; . A stillborn daughter, born 31 January 1510. Katharine was told she was carrying twins & that the other still lived, so the loss was kept secret as she prepared for the birth. No child came. . Henry, born 1 January 1511 - died 22 February 1511. He died suddenly, with no recorded cause of death. . A son, born c.17 September 1513. Either stillborn or lived for a few hours. . A stillborn son, born November/December 1514. Thomas Wolsey wrote in a letter on 15 November that Katharine was “to lie in shortly.” Two letters in December mention Katharine lost a child. . Mary, born 18 February 1516 - died 17 November 1558. Became Queen Mary I of England. .
