Because I love the idea of having twin Hawkes as much as I love symbolism, I’ve decided to make a post where I voice my tinfoil ideas. Dragon Age is FILLED with meaningful names and symbols, but I understand that many of them might not have been intentional – this isn’t a theory whether there’s a fourth Hawke – the canon is pretty clear about that. It never suggested otherwise.
This is an AU that I am justifying by discussing the meaning of symbols found in DA 2. Why I love this au in relation to the game itself.
1. Kirkwall is all about symmetry and mirror images. You have the city’s heraldry, the Amell family’s heraldry, the twin statues that are ever present in the game. Heck, even Merrill’s plot is about a mirror – although that is taken literally.
Starting with Kirkwall’s heraldry (left), you can see how two separate, symmetric parts intertwine into a sword-like line. It looks like a dwarven adaptation of the old tevinter heraldry (right), which resembles a dragon – its wings on each side, a serpentine body and its head.
Kirkwall is a bloodied town. It was the WORST idea to build an actual Circle in a city where the veil is as thin as this. It’s a shame that you have to hunt down Kirkwall’s true lore – through the Band of Three – but it’s so rewarding.
Kirkwall may very be the place where the veil was torn and the magisters entered the Golden/Black City.
Like I said, everything in Kirkwall is in symmetry. Although the city is a maze itself because of its form and construction, the inside of buildings, everything is perfectly symmetrical. The Chantry, the Gallows, etc. Then you have the Twins:
They are forced to watch over Kirkwall, but avert their eyes from the atrocities here. For someone with so little value socially, they are gigantic. The magisters gloated about importance through their slaves, saying ‘Look at how many slaves I have. What I will achieve with them will be of great importance. These slaves are my path to glory and eternity.’
Now, it’s obviously connected to the actual twins we have in the game: Carver and Bethanny. But you don’t actually spend a lot of time with the one you lose, and you interact with the other only in the first act and the ending (+bits and pieces here and there). You learn about your dead twin through the survivor. For me, this feels wasted – the entire game is about twins, oppositions, symmetry, good and bad, Templars and mages and all the grey morality in-between. And family.
The Amell heraldry is in tone with Kirkwall’s - mirror image of a bird, supposedly a hawk? Heheh. Because of this, I like to headcanon that twins appear often in the Amell bloodline - Aristide and Fausten Amell could be twin brothers for all we know. We’re not given much detail on the family - but it obviously holds importance.
2. Lore-wise: Then, there are parts of the story that feel…off, especially if you play with a mage Hawke.
Since they grew up outside the Circle, Hawke is stronger physically than Circle mages are - that much is clear. They technically could beat someone up with their ‘stick’ and its long, sharp blade. But the first thing you do when you enter Kirkwall, in the Gallows, is you beat up other refugees with fireballs and ice – in front of city guards and Templars. Ummm ???
What bothers me more than Hawke running around Kirkwall for four years without being suspected or captured by Templars is how chill the Qunari are around a mage Hawke.
Yet, when you help Ketojan (Sheparding Wolves, Act I), the other qunari tots freak out if you or your party members are mages. And I’m pretty sure the Arishok has people spying or scouting Kirkwall, so someone MUST have told him:
‘Hey, Arishok, there’s a Hawke person in Kirkwall who is a mage and isn’t locked up in a Circle.’
‘Ayyyy lmao that’s cool’
Nope, Arishok would not be cool with working with a mage. Plus, I doubt that (lore-wise) the Arishok would engage in single combat with a mage – even if you still needs to run away like crazy to not be torn in half during that particular battle.
Now, think about the family’s genetics. If you take default Marian and Garrett, you can see how the resemblance works in the Hawke Famiky. Carver and Marian take after Leandra, so they are the most Amell looking in the family. Bethany looks just like Garrett minus epic beard, so one can assume they take after Malcolm.
http://doofyagetoo.tumblr.com/ (Hawke Family Blog) is hilarious but also super-informative: it shows how the family would be like with that extra twin in the family. How Bioware tried to create a family.
It might be why I love DAII so much. I like the idea of not having a single hero (like Shepard is for the Mass Effect trilogy) but what I love more than a randomn group of heroes is a FAMILY of heroes. <3
So, consider having Marian the fourth kid, a snarky rogue who works for the Red Irons, who kills Meeran for betraying her family and giving hints to the Templars while the rest of the family is in the Deep Roads. Marian, the purple masking deep red.
In this AU, all four twins survive - but Bethanny is still going to the Circle and Carver is still a Warden. The sibling relationships dynamics would be more complex. Carver would be even more spiteful for being the least favourite sibling; Bethany would be even nicer compared to her siblings;
This defeats the theme DAII creates so beautifully: that family is more than blood. How Hawke’s crew becomes their new family after they’re all alone.
But I still want Double Trouble Hawkes.
Woah how have I just found this. Usually when it comes to James and Ollie's panels I'm on top of it all
