The more I read posts analyzing Luffy, the more I see that a pivotal decision I made for a fanfic of mine makes perfect sense for his character.
You see, in my fic, I had Luffy (25 y-o) and Nami (26) having a kid and raising her on the Thousand Sunny.
I was 14 to 15 when I had this idea and it wasn't supposed to go deeper than that, but as I kept writing, it did. I grew up, the story grew too, and suddenly I saw myself facing the fact that "Damn, Luffy (and Nami) really decided to raise their kid in a pirate ship".
I couldn't just keep brushing this detail off or using it as a joke, I needed it to make sense.
And luckly, it does.
The more I think about Luffy and read posts or watch videos analysing his character, I'm convinced this is a decision he'd have made.
In my fic, Luffy's already the Pirate King when he and Nami have Luna, and since the World Government was defeated, life as a pirate has been a little calmer, but not for that it's less dangerous. Especially for their crew.
By all means, the smartest thing to do would be to leave their baby with someone of trust, somewhere Luna would grow up safe.
But Luffy could never do that. It's not in his character to abandon or leave people behind, especially the ones dear to him. So there's no way he'd start doing that now, with that little girl who stole a piece of his heart even before she was born - who needed and depended on him, who was his responsibility. There's no way in hell he'd be able to leave her alone. In the same way he was left alone.
And that's not even the only reason.
As I said, Luffy's already the King of the Pirates when Luna's born, and Luffy has a very clear picture of what being the Pirate King's child can do to a person.
How could he ever forgive himself if Luna ended up seeing her existence as a burden, questioning if she deserved to be born, when in his eyes she's the most precious thing to ever exist? ... How could he ever recover if she ended up hating him?
So yeah, I say it's 100% in character for Luffy to decide the risk of raising a child in the Sunny is worth it, as long as it means he'll be a part of his kid's life, protecting her and allowing her to grow surrounded by all the love she deserves.
Hi Liv! How would Garp's first encounter with Luffy's kid go?
Find the rest of the Dadverse here!
~~
-I think it would be kind of weird. (Name) doesn't know anything about Luffy's biological family except for Ace and Sabo. Luffy probably didn't even tell (Name) in the first place. They probably found out about their uncles from Robin or Sanji.
-So when Garp just shows up (Name) is very confused. They're a little panicked by some guy with a navy coat fighting their dad, but Luffy doesn't seem upset and Zoro is still lounging so everything must be fine.
-"So this is the little scamp?" Garp asks, as he goes to ruffle their hair. (Name) kind of backs away, as by age ten or so, stranger danger has set in a little bit better. They naturally drift toward Zoro as he has always be their protector.
-Luffy laughs and does a highly informal introduction. After a few minutes of Garp mosing around the Sunny, (Name) gets more curious. They begin to follow him and Luffy around the ship. (Name) thinks their being sneaky but they are very much not being sneaky.
-Garp politely ignores them for a little while before finally letting (Name) approach. Robin comments about how it's almost like a game of cat and lion, instead of cat and mouse.
-By dinner time (Name) has warmed up to Garp and starts asking him questions about the World Government. As smart as they are, (Name) tries to drag their great-grandfather into a debate.
-Crewmates like Usopp, Chopper, and Jinbe, are sympathetic to Garp as they have dragged into debates with (Name).
-Over all the visit goes well but (Name) is somewhat suspicious of her great grandfather and his associate with the World Government, but over all things went well.
Can I request some interactions between Luffy's kid and the crew(if you don't want to do the whole crew you can just pick the ones you want). Maybe some headcanons from an adventure they had together or something like that.
Cheers!
This is very cute and I had fun working on this one.
Part One - Part Two
~~
-Brook has deemed himself the Bone Grand Daddy. He's a bit too old to be an uncle, so he's more than happy to take up the Grandfather mantle, especially since Dragon isn't going to be around.
-He uses his status as Grandfather to spoil (Name) far more than they should be. Snacks, gifts, and secrets are just a few things he indulges (Name) with.
-Zoro (begrudgingly) took on a father figure role with (Name) when they first came into his life. However, it didn't take long for him to consider himself their actual parent. He came to love (Name) and is fiercely protective of them.
-The first time (Name) called Zoro "dad" was a weird day for him. No one else on the crew sleeps as much as a liitle kid, so Zoro babysat during naptime. He, of course, fell asleep too because he can't help but feel drowsy when sits for too long. Zoro's only partly asleep when he feels (Name) grasping his shirt for comfort. He peaks his eye open and notices (Name) stirring. When they make eye contact, (Name) murmurs, "Hi, dad." They rub their eyes and get comfortable again.
-At first, Zoro didn't think he heard (Name) correctly, but the phrase sucks the wind out of his chest. He never really wanted to be a parent, but something felt right about being (Name)'s dad in that single moment.
-Zoro doesn't say anything to the rest of the crew and just lets them figure it out. I like to think that (Name) calls Zoro's dad before Luffy. Luffy does not love this, but Zoro gets a good laugh out of it.
-Robin and Jinbe seem like they would be the best choice when taking on (Name)'s education. The kid needs to at least be able to read, write, and do basic math. (Name) is a good kid and not too terribly difficult, so there's nothing note worthy to bring up here.
-Oh, Gods above, Franky, and Nami are bad influences. No one can convince me that Franky didn't teach (Name) to swear. He thinks it's so funny to watch little (Name) going up to Zoro and saying, "Fuck off."
-Nami and Usopp tried to teach (Name) self-defense. Key word tried. It does not work. Stranger danger tactics don't work. This may or may not be thanks to Luffy approaching strangers all the time. If Dad can do it, then (Name) should also be able to do it, obviously.
-Usopp is a nervous wreck with this kid. Especially when they start just wandering off into crowds and stuff. He's going to handcuff this child to him one day. The best part is that when (Name) gets a little older, like nine or ten, they start wandering off on purpose just to freak him out.
-At age seven or so, (Name) learned how smoking is actually bad for people. The following conversation with Sanji ensued:
-"Uncle Sanji?" _ "What's up, squirt?" _ "Did you know smoking was bad for you?" _ "Um, yes. I do." _ "But you still smoke?" _ "Yes? Where's this going?" _ "That makes you ugly."
Hello! Had (Name) met Dragon? Maybe they've met him accidentally while they were on their own adventure? Perhaps they didn't realize who he was or just didn't care?
Cheers!
I don’t think (Name) knew who he was. Hell, Luffy probably wouldn’t know who Dragon was.
I imagine (Name) running off on their own (like their prone to do) and getting lost. While looking for a familiar face, (Name) bumps into a scary looking stranger. They will remember the intricate tattoos on his face and the overwhelming sense of power the stranger felt. He didn’t say much but he pointed (Name) in the direction of the Sunny. The stranger walked them toward the dock but he always stayed close to the alleyways and building overhangs.
At the time (Name) doesn’t think much of the encounter but years later when they see Dragon’s wanted poster. They start asking around about who the guy is and casually tells the crew the story. Robin of all people is highly amused. She’s always be fond of Dragon and is glad that (Name) met him. Robin may or may not consider reintroducing them.
Maybe some wholesome and/or interesting dad!Luffy headcanons? Go wild with it.
Thank you!! We got tons of Dad Luffy and his kiddo reader coming up in the next week or so!

-It's not that Luffy is a lousy parent; he just doesn't always think about the consequences of his actions. He has a habit of running off to whatever great thing has grabbed his attention, and a small child is not much an attention grabber.
-He heavily relies on the concept of "it takes a village to raise a child" when it comes to his own children. Luffy could go gallivanting off to some dangerous place and trust that (Name) would be well taken care of on the ship. Maybe Aunt Robin is teaching them to read, or perhaps Uncle Franky has made them some cool new toy, but the kid is safe and comfortable either way.
-That's not to say that Luffy is never present in the life of his kids. He adores them and wants to spend time with them. He just gets... distracted. Yeah, distracted is a good word for it.
-Luffy is a terrible singer, but he still sings lullabies to his kids when they're little. He doesn't really know any songs, so he makes his lullabies up on the spot. Sometimes it's about something interesting he saw that day, or sometimes Luffy creates a theme song just for his kid.
-He tries to start involving his children in his mischief. Maybe it's terrible, but Aunt Nami would never yell at (Name) over a prank; they are too little and too cute for that. Luffy uses this to his advantage.
-Luffy isn't much of a worrier either. He doesn't mind if they wander off and get into trouble. He did that all the time, and he turned out great! He's the pirate king, for the Gods sakes.
-Ironically, Luffy believes that the consequences of one's actions are punishment enough if you get into trouble. Maybe a little lecturing or a light scolding but nothing too severe. As long as his kids try not to get themselves arrested or killed, he doesn't mind.
- Listen, kiddo, nothing is illegal as long as you don't get caught, but you probably shouldn't call the marines "fuck-heads" to their face. Unless they were being "fuck heads."
Would (Name) get Luffy's surname? Also did Luffy named them, you said that he found them when they were really young?
I think that it depends on what life path (Name) goes down. If they want to go on great adventures and a life of crime then hell yeah they're going to take Luffy's family name. If they wish to have a life of peace then (Name) probably wouldn't. If (Name) wants to be left alone by the government, taking Luffy's name official would be the last thing they'd want.
Hi Liv! How's life going? Has anything exciting happened?
Do you have any headcanons about Dad!Luffy and (name) causing chaso or them having adventures together?
I really enjoy your work and to be honest I've re-read most of the a couple times :D.
I hope you have a wonderful day✴️💫🌟!
I'm sure you've seen but I recently was in the ER! I'm okay, I just got a concussion, but I'm all good. I appreciate you!!

-When (Name) is small, Luffy carries them around in a little backpack. I'm thinking of something similar to how Luke carried Yoda around. I imagine it started with Zoro caring (Name) on his shoulders and Luffy got jealous. That's his baby, why does Zoro get to do fun stuff with them? Zoro's answer is that it's because Luffy would accidentally drop (Name). Offended, Luffy acquires a little pouch to carry (Name) around. The kiddo loves it.
-I think I might've mentioned this before, but I don't remember so I'm gonna say it officially now. Luffy and (Name) have tactical plans to raid the kitchen in the middle of the night. Luffy tried to start this when (Name) was young but it doesn't start being effective until (Name) is around eleven or twelve. By the time (Name) is seventeen, Sanji has gotten lots of gray hairs.
-Luffy would convince (Name) to get a stupid tattoo. He's all about hyping up his kid, so when they want a cringe tattoo that they will regret, Luffy still tells them to go for it.
-I think a lot of (Name)'s childhood is learning the most efficient way to maim someone. The Straw Hats tried to implement a no killing rule with (Name), but honestly... most of the Straw Hats have pretty high kill count. To counteract this, they all tried to show (Name) the quickest way to subdue someone without hurting them, too bad.
Hey Liv, how would Luffy or/and Sanji react if his kid accidentally ate mythical zoan devil fruit that grants the user abilities and appearance (when transformed) of Sun Wukong (monkey king). Feel free to ignore this if you don't want to write about it. I hope you have a great day!
Luffy would be so happy. Given what I've already established about Luffy's child in the Dadverse, he would be so excited that he and his little gremlin child are powerful devil fruit users. He may be a little concerned at first, because of the absolute power trip (Name) would go on but other than that I don't think he could be upset about it.
Sanji would probably have a little talk with them about responsibility and safety. I think Sanji would be concerned about (Name) going over the top with their powers and becoming reckless. He would be a nervous wreck if (Name) pulled the same stunts as Luffy.
