Hannah Höch 1889 Gotha - 1978 Berlin
On the Way to Seventh Heaven, 1934 Photomontage Collection Barry Friedman and Patricia Pastor (From the aktuelle Exhibition “Queere Moderne 1900 bis 1950” K20 Düsseldorf)
The Dadaist Hannah Höch explored gender roles and sexuality in the tense field between mass culture and traditional norms. From 1926, Höch celebrated her lesbian relationship with the Dutch writer Til Brugman through numerous collages. On the Way to Seventh Heaven was created after the Nazi seizure of power and a year before her separation from Brugman: Dark clouds gather above the couple. The title oscillates between romantic vision and ominous foreboding.
