The day felt ominous. Heavy rain had pelted against the window for the majority of the day; offering a feeling of pathetic fallacy as you curled up in the warmth of your bed. The thunder and lightning was distant but ferocious; meaning it would only be a matter of time until it reached your home.
Michael knew how you got with weather like this; it tended to wear you down, not one to enjoy the storms, as others did. He had learned how to be a good distraction from the booming weather going on outside.
“Hey, you.” Michael entered your shared bedroom, finding you exactly where he expected. Laid in the middle of the bed, cuddled up in his grey Champion hoodie. It was soft and smelt like him; offering a comfort that nothing else could - apart from Michael himself. Your head rested on his pillow, duvet pulled up to your shoulders in an attempt to block out the weather. The TV played a rerun of your favourite show - one which he knew brought a familiarity, which was comforting in time like this.
You weakly smiled back at him to acknowledge his presence, trying to ignore the anxiety pulling at your chest. He went about his usual routine, the one he knew made you feel better - lighting the vanilla scented candles that lined the windowsill, as well as drawing the curtains to block out the rain. He turned off the main bedroom light and flicked on his bedside lamp, creating a gentle glow of yellow light throughout the bedroom.
“C’mere,” He murmured softly, pulling back the covers on his side of the bed and slipping under them. You instantly shuffled over until he got comfortable. You rested your head on his chest, letting him wrap his arms around your body and hold you close. He was warm and soothing - exactly when you needed to feel in the moment. “You know it can’t hurt you, right babe?”
“I know,” You replied, pulling the duvet back over the two of you. “I still don’t like it, though.”
“It’s okay, babe.” He reassured you, giving you a gentle kiss on the forehead. You moved even closer to him, entwining your legs with his, practically laid on top of him. The weather didn’t let up - tree branches were smacking against your window due to the power of the wind. Michael was something to focus on - a welcome distraction from the weather. “You’ve got me to protect you.”
You tried to stifle a laugh at his words as he playfully slapped your leg, happy to see you smiling even though you weren’t in the best of moods. He was pleased he could help with that. He knew how it felt - because you had the same effect on him too.
“Hey, don’t laugh at me. I can protect you.”
“I know you can, I just enjoy messing with you.” You retorted, looking up at him before pressing your lips to his in a quick kiss.
He playfully gasped at your words before he took over, shifting so he was putting most of his body weight on you and nuzzling his face into your neck, knowing it always made you laugh.
“You can protect yourself if that’s how you’re going to be.” He exclaimed, stopping his assault and laying back against the pillows, taking you with him. As you laid there against him, ignoring the outside world; you knew his words were sincere, and that he truly would always protect you.
4: Being immensely proud when little one takes their first steps alone.
“Michael! Come here, and bring your phone!” You called from the lounge, excitement evident in your voice at the sight in front of you. Michael immediately dropped what he was doing, grabbing his phone from where it was charging on the worktop in the kitchen.
“What’s up, babe?” He asked as he entered the room, his eyes catching on you and his toddler, the two loves of his life. The little girl’s big green eyes lit up as he came into view; she was such a Daddy’s girl, that even the sight of him would bring the biggest smile to her face. She had a pacifier in her mouth to keep her content, her light brown hair a mess on top of her head after taking a nap. She smiled softly at her Dad, melting his heart, like she always did.
You were sat cross legged in front of the sofa, facing her, and she was stood up in front of you, her arms out and tiny hands clinging onto one of your fingers. “I think she’s actually going to walk this time.” You replied, trying not to make a big deal out of the situation and pressure her, but finding it difficult to not let your excitement show too much. “She’s so close, Mike.”
“She’s definitely not wobbling as much as she usually does.” He stated hopefully, leaning down to press a kiss to her forehead as he sat behind her, moving a bit closer so she wouldn’t have as far to try and walk.
“Come here, sweet pea. Are you gonna walk to Daddy?” You picked her up and brought her towards you, leaving kisses to her soft cheeks before turning her around so she was facing Michael. “Move a bit closer, babe.”
“I want a cuddle, baby girl. Come here, come and see me.” Michael cooed at her tenderly, holding his arms out in front of his body as a gesture for her to go to him. The toddler looked at him, and then looked down at her feet, trying to work out how she was going to get there. She whined ‘Dada’ softly, reaching her arms out to Michael so he would pick her up. “No no baby, you’re gonna walk to me!”
Michael so badly wanted to reach out and pull her into his arms - he could never resist a cuddle with her, whether it was the middle of the night or first thing in the morning. Holding her was his favourite thing in the world, it had been since she was born, and he was finding it difficult to resist but he knew she had to learn. He wanted to cry at how big she was, how she wasn’t a tiny baby anymore who would sleep on his chest all day long. She was growing up, just about to take her first steps, and he couldn’t believe it.
“Come here, sweet girl.” He murmured, gesturing with his hands for her to walk to him. “You can do it.”
She looked up at her Dad again, eyes focused on his face. She then turned to look behind to you, as you left another kiss on her cheek and encouraged her to step forward. “Go on, baby girl. Go and get Daddy.” She got her balance, and you let go of her hands as Michael slid his phone towards you, allowing you to start filming. You focused the camera on your two loves as she clumsily put her foot forward, you and Michael trying not to squeal with excitement and put her off. She stepped forward again with her other foot, her movements unsteady but she had taken her first step.
“Come on sweetheart, you’re so close! One more time.” Michael grinned at her, as she giggled at him and then took another wobbly step forward, then another, and she fell into her Dad’s arms. He pulled her close and laid backwards on the floor, holding her so tight to his chest as he pressed kisses all over her face. “That’s my girl! You did so good, angel.”
“I can’t believe she did it! Well done baby girl, we’re so proud of you.” You cheered her, ending the filming on Michael’s phone and setting it down, before moving to lay next to the two of them as you kissed her. “You did it baby girl!”
“She’s so big now.” Michael pouted, holding her even tighter, like it would stop her from getting any older. He rested his cheek on her head, the baby content with the attention she was getting from both parents. She was so cuddly - she’d happily be held all day, and her favourite place was Michael’s warm chest. “Promise me sweetheart, no more growing up, okay? You’ve already grown enough.”
“She’ll be going to school before we know it.” You replied, running your hand through the messy hair on her head softly. Michael shook his head, planting a kiss on her nose before saying, “she won’t, babe. I just told you, she isn’t allowed to grow up anymore.”
You laughed at your husband, rolling your eyes as you watched your baby girl yawn and cuddle her face into Michael’s body. “I think you need a nap after all that excitement, huh?”
So the rest of the day was spent napping on the sofa together, as well as encouraging her to walk a little further every time you tried. Michael felt as though every time he blinked, she was getting older. But he couldn’t be more proud of his baby girl.
