But when you were a hunter, your family was hunters and your friends were hunters - it felt like it changed everything, it felt like it changed who she was. “Dylan,” she said as she saw woman walking past her, “It’s... been a while.”

She never really hid the slight disdain she felt for her maker. She knew having him was critical to her adjustment into this vicious life he gave her.

And when you’re surrounded by centuries old vampires, it was easy to seek out someone who was going through this with you. “Do you like any part of it?” she found herself asking him, “Sometimes I still hate it.”

Then that war happened, though it really just a massacre. And while her instincts told her to one thing, her maker made her do the other. Everything fell apart after that. In the two years since then, she found herself struggling with feeding. Some days she would avoid, while other days she would revel in it. This was the latter. He was so warm, his vein had been calling out to her. Now he was slumped down against the wall, waiting to be healed and compelled. That’s when she heard the noise and spun on her heel, “Just come out, I’m really not in the mood to be played with.”

She looked away from the crowd and turned to the bar to find her cousin. “Is there any chance you have time to step outside with me for some fresh air?” she asked him.
