Day #205 Topeng
Days 157 - 216 Part 1
I know it’s been a while, but here goes...
I’ve still been doing stuff nearly everyday, if I can. I think I’ve missed 5 days since the beginning of the year. Someday’s all I’m motivated for, or all I have time for is a quick 5 minute drawing, or a little bit of colouring.
Some days I’ve been doing 3/4 different projects. Some are Work In Progress, and still are. Some projects took several days to complete..
The Appeal Of The Daily Project
The other month I was a little disappointed that I ended the daily vlogs on my YouTube channel but at the same time it was a relief to end the experiment. What was great about the daily vlog was I had something everyday that I was making, no matter what happened during the day I could look at that piece and know that today I accomplished something. There are a lot of days as an entrepreneur when things can get you down or not quite go your way. Having a piece that might brighten someone else’s day is nice.
It was also a great excuse to learn. I was able to play with the camera, lighting, and speaking. I was in a way forcing myself to do better then the previous day, which hopefully would mean I was getting better at it. Learning and improving is so important for a creative.
I stopped doing the daily vlog but what I still continue doing is a daily video for the Shatter The Vain YouTube channel. I decided to keep this going for a couple reasons. One, like I said I love the feeling of accomplishment that comes with making a video and sharing it with the world. Second, I like that my work has the potential to improve someone else’s day. And the final reason is that I’m really enjoying it. And that can be a struggle with daily projects because the moment a daily project becomes a task or work, you’re going to struggle with it. That’s why if you’re thinking of doing a daily project then make sure you have room for experimentation because you’ll hit a wall at some point.
If you’re not doing a daily project, you should at least give it a try. Keep it simple and see what sort of momentum you can build. In a year if you’re able to keep it up then you’ll be able to look back at that piece and know the day and mood you were in when you created it.
three new arrivals and two tinker projects of the day. cant wait to get some new stuff rolling down the line.
Kate Bingaman-Burt on Rule-based Making
An ode to structure and daily projects: Kate Bingaman-Burt's @CreativeMornings talk on Rule-based Making
You know of Kate‘s work, right? I’m such a big fan.
A few years ago, she was the first speaker at Portland Creative Mornings, and the talk she gave is a wonderful overview of her work and of how and why constraints can allow us to thrive when it comes to making stuff.
We just need to find the kinds of rules and constraints that work for us, naturally. This year, it’s…

#dailyflag
March 3 - April 29, the period of my Wassaic Project Residency. I created a one-word flag for every day of the residency. The word "created" the day, as opposed to reporting or reflecting on it. It was a way to get out of my head and into the world, to make something instead of think about it, to stop the unproductive negative thinking that kept me from jumping out and making things happen (as opposed to thinking about how stupid or dumb they might turn out).
