klaine on new years eve, in response to this post.
Kurt is starting to think that this is becoming a habit of his.
It’s New Year’s Eve and he’s celebrating with the usual crew--Rachel, Brody, Isabelle, and some of their other friends. The party so far has consisted of alcohol, singing, and spontaneous dancing, and Kurt is pleased with the way it’s turning out.
So he’s sitting out on the fire escape, phone in hand, and he can’t help but think back to the last time they had a party like this and he was in the exact same position.
It’s been weeks since that night. They’ve been talking a lot more. And last week, when they were ice skating, Kurt had felt that spark between them that he was sure would never fade. It had been wonderful and also kind of painful because he wasn’t sure if he could go there again, not yet anyway, but...it had been really good to see him. And now, well, it’s almost midnight and the only thing he wants to do is call Blaine.
So he dials.
~
Blaine is not impressed with his New Year’s Eve plans.
So far they’ve consisted of video games with Sam and Finn, a movie with Tina, and then a whole lot of nothing until midnight. He had even considered going to bed around ten when he got home from the theater, but that seemed a little too depressing. So instead he’s watching the ball drop on television and eating the leftover pizza from lunch and feeling generally sorry for himself.
It’s almost midnight, and he doesn’t have anyone to kiss.
Well, he doesn’t have Kurt to kiss. There really isn’t anyone else.
At one minute to, Blaine pulls out his phone. Maybe if he can’t kiss Kurt at midnight, he’ll at least be able to hear his voice.
So he dials.
~
Kurt is buzzing with nerves. This is significant, he can feel it. Calling Blaine at midnight would mean something, and...Kurt is maybe okay with that. Maybe even ready for it. Because even though he’s not sure about anything right now, he’s sure of one thing: there will always be something between him and Blaine. And the start of the new year seems like an appropriate time to let that ball start rolling again.
~
Blaine feels jittery. He always feels jittery when it comes to Kurt. It’s a strange mix of oh-god-I’m-an-idiot and please-forgive-me and you’re-my-best-friend and I-love-you, and he’s not sure when or if that will ever go away. He’s learning to cope with it, though, and so even though he feels jittery he tells himself that it’s worth it. It’s worth the anxiety if he gets to hear Kurt’s voice. And even if he can’t kiss Kurt like he really wants to, just talking to him will be a good way to start the new year.
~
The phone rings twice and then goes to voicemail. Kurt frowns, more disappointed than he would like to admit, and listens to the cheery sound of Blaine telling him to leave a message. He sighs right before the beep and then schools his features.
~
There are only a couple rings before the phone goes to voicemail. Blaine slumps back into the couch and wraps an arm around his stomach. Kurt’s voice tells him to leave a message.
~
“Hey, Blaine! Happy New Year! I’m sure you’re off with the Glee kids at a party or something, having a grand old time singing duets with Tina or that new girl. I...I just wanted to hear your voice. Ring in the New Year with you. I think that maybe, if we were in the same state...well...I just...it would have been nice to kiss my best friend at midnight. ... You’re probably busy, though, so I’ll just leave this little message for you and hopefully I’ll hear from you soon. Happy New Year, Blaine. ... I miss you. ... Um, yeah. Bye.”
~
“Hi, Kurt. Happy New Year! Thank goodness we survived all those impending apocalypses, eh? Hah. Anyway. I just wanted to call you. I thought maybe we could talk at midnight or something, since neither of us have...well. It just would have been nice to talk to you. I’m sure you having a big party, though, with all your fancy New York friends. Say hi to Rachel for me? And take care of yourself. I--I miss you. A lot. Hope you’re having a fun night. Talk to you soon. Bye.”
~
Kurt pockets his phone and takes a moment to compose himself.
~
Blaine slides his phone onto the coffee table and closes his eyes.
~
Kurt heads back into the party before he can hear the voicemail alert.
~
Blaine heads upstairs, his phone on silent in his pajama’s pocket.
~
Neither boy hears his message that night. But in the morning (the late morning), both wake up to one new voicemail. And each starts his year with a smile on his face.
