Dal Segno
Summary: Dal Segno: a musical term that means 'from the sign'; in this case, the sign that maybe there is something more to Kaidan's relationship with Lachlan Shepard.
“The way I see it, you gave it a shot. Maybe not your best, but you made the effort; they have to consider it.” He pauses a moment, head tilting as he considers. “Did you actually get to play? Before your…” he coughs to hide a laugh, but amusement bubbles up and out anyway, “your G-string incident?”
Lachlan’s eyes widen… until a slow, lazy smile curls at his lips. “I… I said that?” His voice is but a whisper, his cheeks slightly pink. “I did… didn’t I? I really did…?”
Kaidan nods. “You did.”
The corners of Lachlan’s lips twitch once. Twice. The third time, a giggle bursts out he doubles over, holding his belly. The laughter is contagious, and Kaidan gives in. For several long minutes, they just stand there laughing like loons… until Lachlan moves...

Excerpt:
The crunch of gravel beneath tires is a unique enough sound this far out from the colony center that it catches Kaidan’s attention even from his position inside the barn. Crossing over to the door to glance out – they aren’t expecting any visitors at the farm today, so far as he knows – he calls back over his shoulder, “Ben? Someone’s pulling up the drive.”
Behind him and on the far side of the building, something lands heavily on one of the storage crates leaving it squeaking in protest. Benjamin Shepard mutters something Kaidan can’t quite make out before adding, “Check it out for me? I’m up to my elbows here.”
Kaidan has found nothing but acceptance since his arrival at the Shepard homestead on Mindoir eighteen months ago. The ease with which the family and other colonists welcomed him leaves him uneasy at times – What if they knew the truth? - but it is also healing, and that he won’t trade for anything else in the galaxy.
Dusting his hands off, he slips just outside the doors to get a better view of the drive. It’s bright out, not a cloud in the sky, and he winces as the sunlight reflects off one of the house windows into his eyes. Shielding them with his hand, the approaching vehicle finally comes into view. He frowns and glances at his chronometer. They shouldn’t be back yet … should they?
“Who is it?”
Ben’s footsteps grow louder as he joins Kaidan at the door. “Fiona and Lachlan.” He glances over at Ben. “Shouldn’t the audition have taken longer?”
The bang of a door fills the air. Lachlan exits the vehicle, grabbing his cello case in one quick, sure, if slightly agitated, move and stalks past his mother into the house. Ben grimaces. “That can’t be good.” Fiona looks in their direction; her expression enough to reinforce Ben’s assessment. “Not good at all.”
Kaidan sighs. Lachlan’s audition for the United Colonial Symphonic Orchestra has been on the calendar for months, the last two of which have kept the teen practicing for hours every night and most of each weekend. Kaidan doesn’t have practical music or performance skills of his own, but even he understands that an hour – including the round trip to the colony center and back – is far too short of time to run through the music the younger man has prepared. Something isn’t right.

Happy Valentine's Day to those who celebrate it! Happy Monday to the rest of us! This wasn't intended as Valentine's Day fluff, but thanks to a little cooperation from Lachlan's muse, it timed out just right! :) Enjoy!
