“ she doesn’t look ready for the marriage bed.”

He almost spat out the drink he had just sipped. With wide eyes he turned to look at the noble young lady beside him. The was the last thing Jinha would have expected to come out from someone so... ‘pure’ and angelic looking as Mishil.

“I beg your pardon--?” Looking around to see if anyone else around them heard her. Thankfully everyone else was busy congratulating the ‘happy couple’, and was not really paying attention to the groom’s twin. With a sigh the army man supposed he could indulge in her statement. “No... although I don’t think he is either.” He said with a smirk playing across his stoic features.

“ your smile looks a little forced.”

“hmm? does it?“ he asks, quickly moving his gaze from another guest to mishil, eyes a bit wide. he never heard that being told to him before, it made him a bit confused. he reached to rub his cheek with his knuckles, head tippied to the side as he quickly scans mishil’s features.

“i’m probably just tired.“ hyojin explains, smiling a bit, this time relaxed as he looks back at all the guests. he didn’t know how to feel about all of this. marriages like this… didn’t sit well with him, but he didn’t want it to show. after all, he didn’t really have much of a say in this manner “she looks pretty, doesn’t she?“ the prince comments, smiling wider as he finally notices his sister.

some would speak of events like this with high praises, commonly referring to such good occasions as blessings from the sky. it’s not anything new: there have been far, far too many weddings that he’s attended in his life before, and it feels that the next one turns out impeccably tedious compared to the previous one, rendering the humdrum unbearable. still, feigns convincing smiles. rinse, lather, repeat.

he’s an exoskeleton of a flatlined mind, and this is the moment when there’s nothing that can save him from the smoked thoughts, wafting and wilting to the point of no return. he’s lost in his own ennui that he doesn’t notice someone tried talking to him until a second too late. there’s that pause between her question and his answer, ❛ ah. ❜ he starts, almost numbly. the inquiry takes him aback — he isn’t typically asked such questions by an almost stranger, and with the familiarity in her tone it’s possible that she’s mistaken him for someone else. ❛ i believe you look magnificent tonight. ❜

“ love isn’t all too important, not to us.”

a royal wedding ; accepting.

“do you really believe that?” there was some truth to her words, dohui knew it. but she refused to believe it. though even her parents had not married out of love, there was still this foolish thought that resided in her mind that perhaps, that just maybe, love was one of the most important things in this cruel world of theirs. 

after all, dohui fell in love everyday, with the smallest things. love did not always have to come from a place of romantic feelings or even be for a person at all. and even though she knows better to voice these opinions, she does anyways. 

“i think love is more important than we believe it to be.”

Deokhye blinked a couple of times, her smile falling slightly before looking at the direction Lady Mishil had been looking at. Laughter and loud voices were the only thing that could be heard from that place making the young Lady smile once again. “ A wedding should be filled with laughter, my lady. Especially if it comes from either the bride or the groom” She spoke while nodding towards the source of loud sound. “Is my Lady not comfortable with such loud conversations?” Deokhye asked “For if that is the reason, I heard the palace has lovely gardens for us to see during this lovely ceremony” Deokhye offered a solution for them if that was the case.

“ don’t you believe there’s someone for everyone?”

in her heart of hearts, she does. if she could be so bold to say, she’d admit it as so -- but she remains reserved ; hands folded by her side. and yet, the expression of agreement is one to be seen, one to be noticed because even if ruihan had feigned otherwise, there was no lying to be made by lips so pure and innocent. 

the nod is so subtle that perhaps it hadn’t been made in the first place but if the smile were any tell-tale, then the world knew. in ruihan’s heart, she knew. even if the rest of the world thought otherwise. oh, how she wished to say yes, she did. but she holds back -- leaving her answer at the way motions go; a nod that may have gone unnoticed. 

an affirmative notion that everyone, but she, would disagree upon. 

so, she turns the question ; questionable hues lock onto the other’s gaze and she proposes her own inquiry, the same one. “do you not believe there is someone for everyone?”

“ it looks like you’ve had enough to drink.”

he knows, he can feel the way the liquor twists within his blood. it relaxes him, drains him of the tension that had coaxed its way into his veins when he had caught sight of her with him and it had angered him to the core. easily so that he had sought immediate refuge in the only thing he knew could calm him and with hyeon no where in sight, he knew there would be no other choice to be had to keep his sanity if not for the alcoholic devil that ran along his fingertips.

tipped back between lips that smirk at the words said, he knows them well -- has heard them every other way these days but never do they tire. 

“perhaps,” teeth reveal, the tongue burns darkly against clear liquid; feels the way it incinerates the length of his throat as it descends down, down, down. but he makes no move to pacify it, instead reaching for another bottle to pour his glass. “but what’s the harm of one more?” he looks to her, hand still raised with the bottle grasped, an unsaid proposal at his lips.

“yes, and I can’t blame them. I’ve been hearing that I need to get married soon or it will be too late.” she was eating some sweets, and she didn’t seem affected by the words of the elders. mishil understood her position and knew that she had long passed from the right age to marry, but as long as she was at the mercy of her father, her only option was to wait until he was willing to get her a husband since she didn’t seem very interested in giving chances to noblemen. romance was no longer a priority and she preferred to leave the dreams of a true love for her younger sister. “don’t you agree with them? maybe my sister is luckier than I am. ”

ruihan is nothing if not acquiescent; she listens well as she's been told to do. a second nature whim that’s hard to shake and one that’s come tested as she’s submerged in crowds she’s unfamiliar in; wrapped around the fingers of a culture she must learn from the bottom up. a traitorous mountain she’ll never quite understand but looks upon in awe. much like her old home, the customs are the same ; women a kind that spared a blind eye and mere prizes to a champion they’re soon to hold dear. it’s never love, ruihan learns, but duty that aligns these paths. much of what the other says are tales ruihan has heard before but the tone they hold is one she finds burns her ears and it causes her tongue to grow faint and quiet. 

as if words hadn’t come apart at the seams ; she feels corned, pressed for conversation but ruihan isn’t one to disagree in order to maintain pleasantries so she pushes the smile across her lips, shaking her head softly. “of course not, my lady.” then a pause, a slight furrow dresses kohl brows in confusion that finally ripples to the surface. 

“why would you decree your fate is less lucky than that of your sister?” fingers play with the hem of her sleeve ; eyes finally raise, a million unexplained wonderings star in her eyes and yet lead in heavenly truths that ruihan believes with utmost optimism. “the year has yet to end, your luck may soon change.”
