AOP - Hanasaka Jinsei Eejanaika

A lesser known AOP Osomatsu song, the theme song of the Damematsu browser game.

This song’s title has 2 cultural references. Firstly, it’s a pun on the folktale Hanasaka Jii-san. It’s also a reference to Ee ja nai ka, a weird nihilistic religious protest-party that took place at the end of the Edo period. 

There’s a couple other idol songs that have this phrase featured heavily, including Johnny’s WEST’s representative song Eejanaika and Kobushi Factory’s Ee Ja Nai Ka Ninja Nai ka. Because anti-foreigner sentiments were a big part of the original protests, I think it’s interesting that the phrase ends up being used in songs by idols, which are an example of Japan fully adopting foreign influence. But in the end, that foreign influence was turned into something quite unique to Japan. 

I digress. This song is really catchy and has really fun and super Matsu-like lyrics!
