1.Name: Dan Brault 2.Occupation(s): Artist 3.Where are you from and what is your education? I was born in Mtl. I studied art at Concordia and Laval University. 4.Where do you live/work (neighbourhood/city/country)? I presently work in Quebec City, QC, CAN. 5.Does your location affect your practice? I’m sure it does but it’s hard for me to tell you why or how. Anything you do will end up having an influence on your practice, so, I imagine living in Québec does affect my work. Being close to national parks, forests and lakes is very important to me...
6.What is your favourite tool in the studio? Mmm...? It’s a tie between my boom box and my sketchbook. 7.Where do you look for your source material? I’m a scavenger... Anything could potentially be of interest to me. But nature is, by far, my greatest fascination. 8.What is you daily art world read? I like the Brooklyn Rail (web). I enjoy art books with plenty of images and good essays. I’m presently reading A Bigger Message: Conversations with David Hockney and it’s quite nourishing. 9.What is your daily non-art-world read? I like all kinds of novels, fishing magazines, comic books, graphic novels, some poetry and, once in a while, the gloomy news in the papers.
10.What role does writing play in your practice? I don’t write much. I find it strenuous and not satisfactory. I like writing words or short sentences in my sketchbook but I’m not very fond of writing as far as art is concerned. I wish I was better at it... I prefer reading to writing.
11.What role does research play in your practice? I like the word experiment better than research. I mean I don’t follow a “scientific protocol” when doing art. I’m more comfortable with improvisation and instinct. I believe that instinct is a very primitive and powerful kind of intelligence.
12.What role does collaboration play in your practice? In the actual making of my paintings: none. In my career: plenty. 13.How does success affect your practice? It gives me more freedom. 14.How does failure affect your practice? It keeps me grounded. 15.What do you identify as the biggest challenge in your artistic process? Longevity. 16.Who are some historical artists you are thinking about? Caravaggio, Vermeer, Matisse, Guston. 17.Who are some contemporary artists you are thinking about? David Hockney, Dana Schutz, Janet Werner. 18.How do you describe what you are making now? A personal countermeasure to cynicism and gloom. 19.Who is an artist that you think deserves more attention? Woman artists are still extremely under-represented in the art world. And despite what Baselitz thinks, I believe that it’s a huge prejudice that needs to end now. We’re in 2015 for fuck sake! It’s wake up time amigos! And Georg, sorry mate, but you’re getting old and senile...
