“You alright, little girl?” 

Dan doubted he would be ‘in trouble’ with the museum for trying to help a lost child find her parents. And it wasn’t like he was going to buy her an ice cream or anything. She didn’t look like she was even all that upset.

“My name’s Dan. I’m good friends with the people who work here. Follow me, I’ll find a guide. They’ll help you find your parents...”

Dan regarded the kid for a moment. He wasn’t so sure about how rare they were, the Doctor’s friends... Dan had a feeling, and from his snooping around the TARDIS, there had been a good deal many before them. Certainly before him and Yaz.

“We’re a lucky group,” Dan agreed and chuckled a little, “And glad to know me and Yaz aren’t the only ones the Doctor went and lost. We got left for three years before she found us again. And I didn’t get any fancy physician job, either. never got that far in school, but... my teachers never got this far, either. Some view, eh?”

The Doctor had said this was supposed to be one of the most relaxing places in the universe. And as far as Dan was concerned, they were right. The Eye of Orion. And the night view was pretty damn spectacular.

“No foolin’,” Dan wasn’t entirely sure if the woman was teasing him or not. But he had just mentioned aliens and being a pirate. He could take a little ribbing over something like that.

“They had a pirate ship an’ all. But they didn’t... come out of the ocean. And I guess-- Well the Doctor said they were on Earth before us.” He paused looking at Thera. The Doctor looked human, too...

“Humans, I mean.”

“Ey, I’m telling the truth!” Dan wasn’t offended, he was used to the occasional eye roll from people in the past. But... well, he needed a friend out here. Until the Doctor showed up again. For all he knew he might be stuck here, in the past. Again.

“Look,” Dan pulled his cell phone out of his pocket after a quick look around to make sure no one else was paying much attention. “If I wasn’t from the future, how do you explain a device like this?” He turned it on, showing the time of day and a back ground screen of Di. He’d taken it without telling her, she had looked so smart, engrossed in her book. But she hadn’t been mad finding out he did, so he kept it.

“Well, I don’t work for the museum as such-- I’m more of a volunteer. Anyway, I thought it might be an idea, you know. Not a lot of kids here ever even imagine goin’ to Oxford. Low income, workin’ class families and all. Not that that’s nothin’ to sneeze at. But there’s a lot of smart kids that pass thru this buildin’ and they just don’t have the resources like you lot have. So... what do you think? I think people would appreciate a classically trained actor from such a prestigious college givin’ a little talk.”

Dan had recognized Luke from a theater production. It had been one of the only ones he’d seen. He was more a football than theater guy, but it had been on a date and she’d been a proper theater nerd. The tickets were more than Dan could really afford but he had liked this woman a lot. Shame nothing really came of it. Bloody 4 hour train to London and she’d broken it off for them ‘not being compatible’. He wasn’t smart enough for her; despite his willingness to enrich himself culturally for her. 

Of course he figured Luke Owens was ‘classically trained’. But he didn’t know anything more about him, really. Maybe if he could get a good guest speaker to agree to a short lecture, Mr. Harding might finally agree to hire him. Dan didn’t mind being a day laborer. But he loved this museum... he certainly would mind being paid to talk about his favorite place in the world to tourists and locals visiting it. The better the museum, the more appreciation for his hometown, the more kids would go off to high end colleges and come back to improve where they grew up.
