Hundreds of chanting protesters, led by Father Michael Pfleger, shut down the northbound lanes of Chicago's vital Dan Ryan Expressway, in a very public demonstration against the violence which afflicts our city.
As the marchers merged onto the busy interstate at 79th Street, police attempted to maintain a limited traffic flow by restricting the protest to the two right lanes. After an hour long stand-off ensued, the marchers were allowed to proceed on all four lanes to the exit at 67th Street.
It felt strange and exhilarating to be walking all over the expressway, where I’m normally breezing by at 60 miles per hour. One can imagine that the drivers corked up for miles behind the march, expressed rather different emotions.
I would say that, at least from my point of view, the protestors and the police both acted with respect and restraint, as well as with appreciation for each other's rights and duties.
(More of my photos from the protest can be viewed here.)
Thousands of protesters shut down a section of the Dan Ryan Expressway Saturday for an anti-violence march.
