Why I am making my own homemade dog food from now on…
As you get older, you tend to question what you think you’ve always known. Such is the case with how I am feeding my dogs. Having just lost two dear, loving companions over the last few months, my quest to learn how and why dogs get cancer has opened my eyes in ways that I never saw coming. Oddly enough, I am a holistic nutritionist - for humans of course. Having the background in mainstream “nutrition” myths and all out lies, I wonder why I never questioned what I was feeding my dogs? After all, the bags said things like “premium, holistic, grain-free” and other feel-good words. Didn’t everyone feed their dogs dry kibbles with the occasional wet can of mushy mess added for flavor? Of course they did... and canine cancer has skyrocketed.
So what exactly do these dog food companies put into their best of the best? What I discovered would absolutely, unequivocally, horrify me. Brace yourself my fellow dog lovers - the truth is going to sting, and sting hard. Through some research, I discovered that most commercial dog food companies are out to make a profit, even if they know what they are feeding your dogs are literally killing them... profit over ethics. How about this to whet your appetite? Road kill. Dogs and cats that have been euthanized at local shelters. The non-human grade consumable sick and dying farm animals. All of those are purchased and processed by, you guessed it - the dog food companies. To top that off, there are chemical preservatives, most of which have been outlawed for human consumption. All of this nonsense is processed together, mixed into a stew of unfailing filth (fecal matter included), heated to high temperatures, and dried into a hard, crumby brown kibble. This my friends, is what I had been feeding my fur babies. My guess is that it’s what you’ve been doing too, because no one told you. So now what?
In a book about how to feed a dog with cancer, I discovered a whole host of homemade food recipes that you can feed to dogs, even ones to prevent it. Low and behold, much of what I read was what I had been prescribing to my own nutrition clients - whole grains (no corn, soy, or wheat) such as rice, quinoa, and amaranth. Vegetables. Fruits. Suddenly... the light bulb went on!! They would thrive with real food, just like we would. Imagine that!
So as not to cause a major intestinal upset, we are transitioning to whole food, real food in place of kibbles, diet. So far, the results are AMAZING. I can’t tell you the amount of times these dogs looked at the kibbles in their old bowls, and just walked away - almost defeated. Not now... these girls are asking for seconds and literally plowing through their meals. Their breath is less stinky already (who knew the kibbles are full of artificial junk, sugar, and well, you know?), their eyes are brighter, they are less itchy, and they sleep so well at night now.
I won’t go back. I don’t care how much work it is - and let’s be honest, it’s not THAT much work to cook in bulk. And it’s cheaper. Add up what you are spending on monthly kibble and vet bills, and compare that with the ground turkey, carrots, broccoli, kale and brown rice. Real food wins in the cost category as well.
I’d love to hear from those of you who are feeding your dogs this way. Send me a message and share your best recipes! OH KALE YEAH!!
