MJ’s top three (FREE) apps for writers
Note: I use an iPhone. These may or may not be available on Android.
Note: these are free to use. However, there are premium benefits that require subscription. I do not subscribe to any of these, though, and don’t feel the need to.
Notion. Wow, I cannot sing the praises of this app enough. It allows extremely detailed organization. I make a master page for my WIP with links to pages for outline, characters, and any extra info I want. You can include media like photos and audio. You can make checklists. Pages are unlimited (which I think is important for a writing app). It can be complicated to navigate at first, but the help it provides is worth the learning curve.
Werdsmith. As much as I hate a limited document number for a writing app, I think Werdsmith is still worth it. I use it exclusively for drafting novels and short stories. The interface is gorgeous and uses markup, which makes it really fast for typing on mobile. Sharing your work is also extremely easy, but it does not allow for collaboration.
Danger Notes. Essentially it’s a notepad with a timer. If you stop writing, everything gets deleted. The amount of time you need to write nonstop is customizable. I don’t use it often, but it’s a great way to just get words out. Sometimes you need to word vomit and fix it later, and that’s what Danger Notes forces you to do.
If you have a favorite writing app, let me know! I’m always looking for good ones.
