A grand juror from the Breonna Taylor case in Kentucky has released a statement discussing how the grand jury was never given a chance to deliberate if homicide charges were justified against the police officers who shot and killed Taylor. A recent ruling from a circuit court judge is allowing the jurors to speak publicly about the typically secret process despite pleas from AG Daniel Cameron’s office to not let the grand juror speak, saying that it would violate oaths of secrecy. The judge also ordered the grand jury records from the investigation to be released, citing the need to show if 'publicly elected officials are being honest.’ ‘After hearing the Attorney General Daniel Cameron’s press conference, and with my duty as a grand juror being over, my duty as a citizen compelled action,’ the juror wrote. ‘The grand jury was not presented any charges other than the three Wanton Endangerment charges against Detective Hankison. The grand jury did not have homicide offenses explained to them. The grand jury never heard anything about those laws. Self defense or justification was never explained either. Questions were asked about additional charges and the grand jury was told there would be none because the prosecutors didn't feel they could make them stick. The grand jury didn't agree that certain actions were justified, nor did it decide the indictment should be the only charges in the Breonna Taylor case. The grand jury was not given the opportunity to deliberate on those charges and deliberated only on what was presented to them. I can't speak for other jurors but I can help the truth be told.’ This news comes one month after the grand jury indicted former Detective Brett Hankison and charged him with three counts of wanton endangerment in the first degree, which stemmed from bullets he fired into a neighboring apartment. The other two officers, Sgt. Jonathan Mattingly and Detective Myles Cosgrove, were not charged. Following the announcement, Kentucky AG Cameron said that ‘the response is that the grand jury was given all of the evidence, presented all the information, and ultimately, made the determination that Detective Hankison was the one to be indicted.’
