Dynamic Black and White//Week 2
Daniel Hachmann
Hachmann was born during October in 1977 and is from Cologne, Germany. It took Hachmann around 30 years to find his love and passion for photography. Hachmann specializes in fine art and architecture. It is very obvious that he uses architecture as his subject for his photos as one of his most noticeable projects is entitled ‘Urban Tribes’. Daniel Hachmann has had some of his work displayed in the German branch of the Saatchi Art gallery. From looking at the unique style of Hachmann you can decipher that he is a self-taught photographer.
The four images I have chosen as my inspirations are from Hachmann’s famous series, ‘Urban Tribe’. I feel that the purpose of the series is to represent how daunting big cities can be when you are amongst skyscrapers. Combining with the title of a ‘Tribe’ it personifies the city as a tribe surrounding and almost capturing the person who’s POV we are seeing. The subject of this shoot is quite clearly huge buildings, of which have been shot from a low angle to accentuate the size of the buildings. In terms of camera equipment, it is hard to pinpoint what has been used. However, you can tell that these images have been digitally manipulated to be black and white and square. The square crop helps to accentuate the leading lines created by the buildings and creates a center of focus at the top of the building.
I chose to use Daniel Hachmann as my inspiration as I felt that there was a lot to work with in terms of his framing, location and angle. I plan to not directly replicate Hachmann’s work, as I want to experiment with aspects of his work. I want to ensure that I take my images in a different location to Hachmann in order to make my work appear more unique, but still being able to show inspiration. I plan to take inspiration from the low angles used, the framing and the leading lines used in each piece of work. As much as I really like the images of the skyscrapers, I am not going to be using them as I have shot in London before and want to experiment with locations.
