Terminator Genisys was released on July 1, 2015. It was the 5th movie in the Terminator franchise and the 3rd not made by James Cameron. It was meant to be part of a triology but its critical and financial failure and court battles allowed Cameron to regain the rights and make Terminator Dark Fate in 2019. The movie involved John Connor (Jason Clarke) in 2029 sending Kyle Reese (Jai Courtney) back to 1984 to protect Sarah Connor (Emilia Clarke), but it turned out the timeline was altered and she was now protected by the Guardian (Arnold Schwarzenegger).
