Fallout 4 Companions - Expectations vs Reality
Expected to like, and did like:
Preston- I love unashamedly good characters who are kind and nice to the majority of people you encounter. (Yes the radiant questing bugged me but thats not a reflection on the character)
Piper - Cute and punchy, moral code similar to my own.
Curie - Adorable doctor. Cutest idle dialog ever.
Cait - Kickass lady, “more than they made me” trope, great to watch her suplex people.
Dogmeat - Puppy!
Expected to like, and didn’t like:
Strong - I usually love the Supermuties (Fawkes and Lilly were my favorite companions for 3 and NV) but Strong seemed very underdeveloped in comparison.
No strong opinion before or after:
Codsworth- I like his concept and the name thing is nice but he seems gimmicky.
Danse- I don’t like the BoS and I found his demeanor when you meet him so off-putting I never recruited him for long. I’m aware he grows as a character but I honestly tried to put up with his first couple of dialogs and couldn’t bring myself to hop in and out of power armor for the next hour or so to get the rest.
X6-88 - Like with Danse, I’ve not really traveled with him enough to pass judgment yet.
Expected to dislike, and disliked:
Danse could conceivably go in here because I have no love for the Brotherhood so wasn’t expecting much from a Paladin, but I felt that was unfair because I’ve not played a character that’s invested in him or the Brotherhood yet, so I’m reserving judgment.
Ditto X6 and the Institute. Also I hadn’t seen anything about him in order to pre-judge him either way.
Expected to dislike, and liked:
Hancock- Most of what I’d seem of him before playing was “Drugs” and “mildly predatory and very aggressive”. I’m incredibly glad these were gross misrepresentations and he turned out to be a really great character.
MacCready - I still remember Little Lamplight you arsehole, you’re lucky you grew up nice.
Valentine- Thought he might be gimmicky. Also thought I wouldn’t be able to deal with Mercer Frey following me across the wasteland. I was wrong.
Deacon - Actually in my first play-though I DIDN’T like Deacon much, but he grew on me. I don’t usually have much sympathy for lying characters, but at least he tells you right off the bat. Has a satisfying amount of meta to him and I’m always a slut for meta.
Obviously these are opinions and are in no way intended to hate on any character specifically.
