There’s nothing that gets a Nigerian going like the idea of free food. No matter how much money or rice you have at home, there’s just this thing about eating a meal you don’t have to pay for, that seems incredibly appealing. Why do you think we love weddings and other celebratory events? Well, just like you, I love me some free food, and that’s why when I got invited to a barbecue recently, I didn’t hesitate in saying yes.
Let’s be honest, barbecues aren’t that common in Nigeria. (well, maybe they are now) and although this isn’t my first time going for one, just like every other invite I get in life, my first thought was, “what am I going to wear?”
Even though dressing up (or down, in this case) for a barbecue seems very easy, there’s a thin line between looking effortlessly cool, and looking like a homeless person. So how do we thread this line with caution and still have fun asking for more chicken? Well, follow my lead because I have you covered on what you need to look comfortable and sexy, along with which items needed an extra “oomph” to standout.

It really doesn’t matter if it’s a T-Shirt or Cuban-collared print shirt, just make sure it’s bold and announces your arrival without looking tacky. Look for something with a nice strong color that ensures you don’t blend into the background, or go for a nice vintage print if you’re feeling spicy.

Look, as much as we are here to serve fashion, the primary goal is to eat until our stomach’s content. Which means, no need to wear your skinnies jeans. Look for loose shorts or sweatpants, basically something that allows your thighs to move freely. Your shirt is already doing the talking, it’s fine if your pants are okay, as long as they’re not basic!

We all know how people tend to be overly friendly at gatherings like this. From relatives asking you to shave your beards, to old friends or acquaintances asking you about your job, it gets super exhausting. To avoid all these unnecessary niceties, wear an “I can’t see anyone” shades. People find it hard to hold conversations with you when they can’t look you in the eyes, use this to your adantage. Plus you’ll end up looking super stylish.
