Bilbo, not Thorin or Fili or Kili, dies in the Battle of the Five Armies. Thorin never recovers from the loss, and instead of gold sickness, he becomes obsessed with raising Bilbo from the dead. His nephews grow fearful of their uncle's newfound fascination with dark magic. When word of a necromancer reaches Thorin's ears, the dwarf king swears Erebor and even the Arkenstone for Bilbo's resurrection.

I thought that was just a tale told to hobbit-children to scare them away from adventures,” scoffed Mr Baggins. Mr Proudfoot stopped, turned, and leaned towards Mr Baggins, cane pressing yet another indent into the miserable rug lining the hallway. He squinted - his sight was failing him - at the younger hobbit, before sighing. “Frodo, my boy, there is so much you don’t know.”

this discussion about dark!Bilbo has suddenly turned into a grimdark post-apocalyptic AU where Legolas is a refugee of the extermination of the Elves, Gimli is indoctrinated,  Frodo is a badass historian who takes note of everything that happens with Sam, Merry, and Pippin helping him, Lotho Sackville-Baggins becomes a resistance fighter, and the Dwarves invent the Daleks.

...yeah

it's a dark comedy.

my friend and I are seriously considering writing a dark!Bilbo AU

I mean come on it's logical really

if Bilbo stayed behind to become Thorin's advisor

the Ring would perceive that its wearer has now more power, and would fuel his ambitions accordingly

Bilbo would be able to use the Ring for so much more

but also become corrupted so much quicker
