Hello! If it's ok, I have a question about data/datascapes. In DDD, Xemnas states that data can't have a heart, and therefore cannot dream. But in KH3, the heart theory is disproven by Dark Riku and Dark Baymax. Is it because data needs to interact with the real world and not a simulation in order to develop a heart? Could this also mean data *can* dream, but datascapes cannot?
To be a 10000%, I still can’t quite tell if Xemnas (or Young Xehanort right after) are completely correct in saying data can’t dream for a few reasons. For one, while I’ve heard MANY times people have said “oh they’re just saying that to dishearten or confuse Sora to lead him to the darkness” and while Xemnas has been guilty of that before, Young Xehanort has been shown to actually tell Sora (and Riku) true vital information multiple times-- he told Riku that his ability to wield the keyblade passed over to Sora during KH1′s beginning, that Sora is going to disappear if he keeps trying to save his friends, etc. So from I can tell, even if Xemnas isn’t that reliable because he’s been known to mislead ( like him also saying nobodies don’t have hearts in KH2, or that Roxas can’t have a body in KH3 ) Young Xehanort himself has been proven to be quite a reliable source of lore and information.
HOWEVER, The Grid not being able to dream still does not explain the fact that the Grid IS one of the 7 sleeping worlds we have to unlock before getting to The World That Never Was-- so that implies datascapes themselves CAN dream. I could honestly go back and forth on this debate LOL
But Tron/Rinzler himself was also shown to have some sense of a heart in DDD because while technically the Rinzler in the Grid is the ORIGINAL Tron, and the Tron in KH2 is just a copy that Ansem the Wise created when copying The Grid into Space Paranoids for his own computer. However, Rinzler from the original datascape STILL was able to recognize Sora at the last minute. So that shows that both Rinzler from the original datascape and Tron from the copied datascape still have a connection, and I’m assuming that connection is heart related and not data related. While Coded implied it, DDD was the first game to explicitly state that anything can grow a heart if its interacted with enough. So I suspect Rinzler and Tron had that connection spark, which lead Rinzler to remember Sora. But even here, Rinzler interacted with SORA, a real user and not a program. So maybe it IS what you said: that data needs to interact with the real world and not other data in order to develop a heart. Otherwise, data characters from say, any videogame, would constantly start to defy controls because they’re growing hearts. Maybe data Sora from Coded was able to grow a heart explicitly because of his interactions with Mickey and co? I can’t say for sure because it’s been some time since I last watched Coded’s movie.
BASICALLY anon.... I dont know LMAO! I WANT to believe Young Xehanort, but there does seem to be contradicting evidence to what he and Xemnas say.
I would include Dream Eaters in this as well, BUT it looks to be like Dream Eaters can exist in the real world in general ( like The Real World That Never Was ), so that doesn’t seem to effect whether or not The Grid is a sleeping world.
Sorry I don’t have an exact answer!!
